Depth Dominates

Everyone got involved on Monday night, as the Eagles put together a 74-56 win over Point Loma.

LA MIRADA --- For the second time in six days, Biola (16-7, 12-4 PacWest) defeated the Point Loma Sea Lions (13-13, 8-11 PacWest) on the basketball court. The Eagles improved their winning streak to three, while overcoming PLNU inside Chase Gymnasium by a 74-56 final margin.

All 12 Eagles saw the court on Monday night in a rout of Point Loma. Nine athletes collected over 10 minutes of action, as the depth of the BU roster was on full display.

"Our defensive intensity and swinging the ball made the difference tonight. The last four games we've been stuck around 50 points, so getting to that 70 points felt really good," said Laila Walker.

The team effort was once again evident on the defensive end of the floor. PLNU could not get anything going on offense, as the Eagles held their opponent to under 60 points for the third-straight game.

On the night, the visitors tallied just 19 field goals on 39.6 percent shooting and four three-pointers on 28.6 percent shooting from long range. The full court pressure from BU created problems for PLNU in the frontcourt, causing 20 turnovers for the Sea Lions with 10 Biola steals.

A good chunk of the Biola offense was built off of the strong defensive play. The 20 PLNU giveaways led to 27 points for the Eagles in the win.

Amiah Simmons was the catalyst in the BU attack, posting an efficient 19 points on a 75.0 field goal percentage. The lefty did her damage in the paint, finding space near the basket to net tough and acrobatic layups. Simmons also paced the team on the boards, grabbing six rebounds.

The important stretch for Biola came in the second quarter. After the first two minutes, the Eagles went on a 22-7 run, only allowing free throws from PLNU in the eight-minute stretch. The three-pointers began to fall for Biola, sparking the run, as five treys came in with four different Eagles sinking the big shots.

Point Loma made a push in the early going of the second half, attempting to eliminate its deficit. The 8-0 rally brought the score to 44-33 but a media timeout slowed the momentum for the visitors. BU responded with nine-straight points to bulk up its lead once again.

Biola's largest lead came in the fourth quarter with a long ball from Simmons to push the advantage to 24. With under four minutes to go, the game was firmly in hand for BU as they cruised in for the 74-56 triumph.

BU will be back at it on Tuesday night, as they face off against Holy Names on Senior Night.
