Defense Does It

Biola was stout on defense on the way to a win in the Cornerstone Cup matchup against Azusa Pacific.

LA MIRADA --- The heated and electric battle between the Biola Eagles and the Azusa Pacific Cougars came down to the wire on Saturday night. Ultimately, Biola protected its home court and defeated the recently clinched regular season PacWest Champions, APU, behind an impressive effort on defense.

The entirety of the weekend rivalry game was tightly contested. Neither team could gain real separation, as the largest lead for either squad was 10 points.

The close competition came down to a necessary fourth quarter to decide the winner. Entering the final 10 minutes of action, the visiting Cougars were on the front foot, 43-41. Early in the period, Azusa Pacific maintained the pressure, going ahead by five points multiple times.

Biola held strong and kept within striking distance. At the six-minute mark the BU defense put on the clamps. A 50-45 BU deficit turned into a 53-50 BU lead. The 8-0 run featured a six minute stretch of zero points from the visiting Cougars. The Eagle defense was stifling, forcing seven turnovers and holding APU to 0-3 from the field.

Amiah Simmons gave the Eagles the advantage with a layup at 2:31 on the clock. Rabe added two foul shots to give BU a three-point edge, while offering four total points in the eight-point run.

Still within one shot with less than 20 second left, the Cougars had hope to hold on to. The visitors missed their three-point attempt with 13 seconds on the clock but found the rebound and got to the free throw line. One make brought the score to 53-51 and a Biola rebound and APU foul sent Aysia Johnson to the line.

The senior was clutch at the charity stripe, knocking down both free throws. The two points made it a two possession game with under 10 ticks left. The Cougars could not find the bottom of the basket, as the Eagles held on for the 55-51 victory.

51 points was the lowest scoring total for the Cougars this season. Biola held the visitors to just 35.2 percent from the floor and 26.3 percent from long range, while corralling 13 steals and forcing 26 turnovers.

Johnson was consistently in the thick of it defensively for the Eagles. Six steals from the veteran guard paced the team and energized the defensive effort for BU. "I knew I was having a rough game offensively, so I was really focusing on getting my energy up on defense," commented Johnson after the win.

The offensive load was carried by Simmons, who picked up another 20-point performance. The freshman landed at exactly 20 points and led the team in the fourth with six of the team's 14 points.

Laila Walker did it all for BU, logging 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Rabe led the team on the boards with eight, while adding 10 points.

Biola will look to keep its momentum going with another home game on Monday at 7:30 pm against Point Loma.
