Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Eagles End 2022 Strong

The women’s basketball team ended 2022 strong with a big 82-54 win over Hope International.

LA MIRADA --- The Biola University Women's Basketball team ended 2022 on a high, winning 82-54 against Hope International at Chase Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles started the game on a good note by winning the jump ball. Eleni Cabrera got the scoring started with the Eagles' first basket and then the Royals got the opportunity to tie up the game early with two good free throws (2-2). The Eagles came back strong with the next 10 baskets, giving Biola the 19-2 advantage.

The Royals managed to slow the Eagles down, scoring the next two baskets which brought the score to 19-7.

Despite a good effort from HIU, BU remained ahead with Madi Chang ending the quarter with a three-pointer (25-10).

The Royals found an offensive groove in the second quarter where they ended up outscoring Biola 30-19. The Royals weren't able to take the lead, but cut their deficit to 44-40 heading into halftime.

Biola kept their composure in the third quarter where they were unphased when the Royals scored first (44-43). Cabrera confidently answered back with a beyond-the-arc basket, growing Biola's lead to 47-43.

Biola continued to extend their lead thanks to free throw opportunities given to them by Hope International. BU scored their next four points off free throws by Natasa Radovic and Laila Walker.

The Eagles went on to score 20 points. Biola led HIU by as much as 28 points before the conclusion of the third where the score was 72-46 in Biola's favor.

The fourth quarter slowed down offensively and became more of a defensive battle. Jordan Rabe eventually broke through for the Eagles, making the first layup in the fourth quarter with seven minutes remaining (74-46). Two minutes of tight defense passed, but once again Biola would break through. Aysia Johnson scored a solid three-pointer that improved BU's lead 77-46.

Biola stuck together as a team and continued to build upon their lead until their eventual 82-54 victory.

Biola excelled beyond the arc with a 46.4 percent three-point average. Walker and Cabrera led their team with three three-pointers each contributing to Biola's total of 13.

Cabrera led the Eagles in scoring with 13 points followed by Jessa Thurman and Jordan Rabe scored 12 points each. Thurman also recorded her first double-double of her career with 11 rebounds added to her 12 points.

Thurman reflected, "I feel like we played together and celebrated each other through the whole game no matter what happened. I believe that our strong team bond will make us a big threat when facing future opponents."

The Eagles improved 5-8 overall, while Hope International fell 12-3 on their season. Biola will continue their homestand against Holy Names on Thursday, Jan. 5 at 5:30 pm at Chase Gymnasium.
