Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Ethan McGarvey, Sports Information Director

Slow Start Sinks BU

The Eagles were spectacular in the second half but could not erase the deficit against Dominican.

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. --- It was a tale of two halves on Saturday when the Eagles (7-4, 3-2 PacWest) traveled to San Rafael, California to take on Dominican (7-4, 4-1 PacWest). Each team owned one half of the game but the Penguins came out on top in a high-scoring 91-86 affair.

The opening 12 minutes of the contest looked like how you would expect a tough conference matchup to look. The largest lead for both teams was five up until that point.

The tide changed at the seven-minute mark in the first half with the Eagles down by three at 31-28. Dominican put together a 17-2 run to cap off the half, giving the Penguins a 17-point lead at the break. Through the stretch, Biola tallied seven turnovers to aid the DUC cause.

After halftime, the Penguins continued to push their advantage. Multiple times in the second half, the host squad touched a 20-point lead, including as late as 10:39 left in the game.

It did not take long for the Eagles to get back into the game. Four and a half minutes of scoreless basketball for DUC helped the Eagles accumulate 14-unanswered points, which cut the deficit to six. In the rally, BU netted five-of-10 shots from the field with no turnovers, while holding Dominican to 0-6 shooting with a pair of turnovers.

The Penguins quickly regained their composure and shut down the BU momentum. As the clock moved past one minute remaining, the Eagles still trailed by four points. Daniel Esparza made a late three but the Penguins made enough free throws to stay out of reach for the 91-86 final.

The BU offense put up impressive totals in the second half, recording 56 points with 14 made free throws and a 50.0 field goal percentage.

A team mindset permeated through the offense with five scorers in double figures. Nathan Medina came in off the bench to lead the team, shooting lights out from long range. The freshman tacked on 21 points with four treys.

Maximo Milovich continued his dominance inside with his fifth double-double of the season and his second in consecutive games.

Milovich also added four assists along with Esparza. Alex Wright was the main distributor, tallying five in the contest.

Biola men's basketball will return to the planks on Monday, taking on Academy of Art on the road at 3:30pm.
