Biola Comes Together

The women’s basketball team came together with a big 61-54 win against Fresno Pacific to open up conference play.

FRESNO, Calif.--- The Biola Women's Basketball team came together and opened up conference play with a thrilling 61-54 win over Fresno Pacific at the Special Events Center.

Biola improved 1-6 overall and 1-0 in the PacWest Conference while Fresno Pacific fell 4-3 overall and 0-1 in the PacWest.

The Eagles finally received the result they were looking for, achieving their first win of the season when it mattered the most.

"Everyone was committed to each other in an overall really good team effort," reflected Jordan Rabe. "Fresno was physical and played hard, but we finally found a way to get over the hump at the end of a close game. This was a good opportunity for us to figure out how to finish a game against a very tough team. This win will help us down the road because we're going to have a lot of tough, close games throughout conference play."

The Eagles and Sunbirds played a tight first quarter where the score was tied four times. Jessa Thurman came off the bench and made the go-head basket that gave the Eagles 15-13 lead.

Fresno Pacific was the first to score in the second quarter, but BU quickly stopped their momentum with a basket by Rabe (17-15). Biola would continue to build upon their lead, largely benefiting on fouls committed by Fresno Pacific. The Eagles scored more than half of their second-quarter points off of free throws. Three Eagles were perfect at the line including Rabe (4-4), Thurman (2-2) and Eleni Cabrera (2-2). Biola led by as much as nine points before settling with a score of 30-24 heading into the break.

The Eagles worked hard to stay on top in the third quarter. FPU chipped away at BU's lead until they tied the score, 34-34. Maya Whiteside was then fouled and was able to put her team ahead with two good free throws (36-34). After reclaiming the lead, Biola pressed on and distanced themselves by as much as eight points before the third ended in Biola's favor, 45-38.

Sydney Moran came off the bench and opened up the fourth quarter with a downtown basket that gave Biola their biggest lead of the game (48-38).

T
he Sunbirds once again made it interesting, tying up the game (50-50) with a little over four minutes remaining. A big beyond-the-arc shot by Rabe put the Eagles ahead where they remained for the rest of the game in their eventual 61-54 win.

Rabe was the Eagles leading scorer of the night with 20 points. Rabe shined on the court, shooting 50 percent in the field. She was also a perfect 6-for-6 at the free throw line and had a big presence at the glass where she collected nine rebounds.

Thurman was the Eagles' next highest scorer with 11 points. She was followed by Aysia Johnson who scored eight and Laila Walker who contributed seven points.

Biola will continue their road trip up North where they are set to play Holy Names next. The Eagles face the Hawks on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 1 p.m. in the Tobin Gymnasium.
