Eagles Take Down Hawks

The women’s basketball team took down Holy Names 63-50, improving to a two-game winning streak.

OAKLAND, Calif.--- The Biola Women's Basketball team took down Holy Names 63-50 at the Tobin Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles (2-6, 2-0 PacWest Conference) improved to a modest two-game winning streak while the Hawks (0-8, 0-2 PacWest) fell 0-2 in the league.

"It's great that we are starting off conference with wins," reflected Aysia Johnson. "We had a tough preseason schedule, but we learned how to compete and push through adversity. We are not even close to playing our best team basketball, so it's exciting that we are still pulling out wins with a lot of room for growth."

Biola started the game strong, outscoring Holy Names 21-9. BU saw success beyond the arc where they shot a successful 57 percent to HNU's 20 percent. Forty-four percent of the baskets Biola made in the first quarter were three-pointers. Eleni Cabrera led the effort with two successful three's followed by Johnson and Laila Walker who each had one.

Holy Names went on to outscore Biola in the second and third quarters, but Biola would rely on their defense to remain ahead. In the second quarter, the Eagles led by as much as 23 points and the Hawks would chip away at the score until the game was tied in the third quarter, 37-37.

The score wasn't tied for long as Jessa Thurman scored on the next possession and a shooting foul by Holy Names allowed Thurman to create a three-point lead for the Eagles (40-37).

Biola would go on to score the next two baskets and hold the lead until the Hawks took their first lead of the night in the fourth quarter. BU led by three-points heading into the fourth, but HNU made their move in the quarter's opening minutes. The Hawks scored the first two baskets which put them up, 48-47.

Walker quickly put the Eagles back on top, shooting a three-pointer that gave them a two-point lead (50-48). Biola went on to distance themselves by as much as 13 points in their eventual 63-50 win.

Aysia Johnson recorded her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds against the Hawks. The Graduate Student also made two steals, which is her sixth game where she recorded two steals or more.

Thurman led the Eagles with 13 points. She was a successful 6-for-10 in the field and 1-for-1 at the free throw line. Walker was also an offensive standout with six assists in the win.

Defensively, Jordan Rabe was a key point in Biola's success with 12 rebounds, four blocks, and three steals.

Biola will head home and prepare to play next on Wednesday, Dec. 7 at 5:30 p.m. against Point Loma at Chase Gymnasium.
