Eagles Maintain for Sunday Finish

The men’s and women’s swim and dive squads held their position through Sunday's events, finishing in third and fourth, respectively.

LA VERNE, Calif. --- The Eagles earned runner up honors on many different events on Sunday at the La Verne Winter Invite. The collection of west coast teams battled it out on the third and final day of the meet. 


BU men took third in the competition, tallying 1,333 points. Biola was one of only four teams to reach the 1,000 point threshold, as they only trailed UC Santa Cruz and Simon Fraser. 

On the women's side, the Eagles came out with 902.5 points in a larger field of 14 teams. BU maintained its fourth position on day three, keeping its lead over Azusa Pacific and Concordia in fifth and sixth.

Biola added another strong relay performance after a thriller on Saturday. On Sunday, the Eagles took second in the 400yd freestyle relay behind the efforts from Tanner Smith, Noah Taylor, Alex Ness and Jacob Haaksma. The group combined for a time of 3:06.08.

Eagle divers found success with a trio of top-three finishes. Caleb Pook was near the top of the leaderboard in both the 1mtr and 3mtr dives, scoring as the runner up in the 1mtr. Pook scored 262.50 for second in the 1mtr and nabbed bronze in the higher dive at 215.35.

Abby DePina made the jump in the 3mtr and 1mtr dives for third place (251.40) and 10th place (172.60), respectively. Eliana Cote took eighth in the 1mtr at 206.45 and seventh in the 3mtr at 204.65.

The butterfly stroke looked good for Sean Rho, who took second in the 200yd event. The freshman powered through with a time of 1:53.32 for the podium finish. Morgan Kampfer scored on the women's side in the same event with a seventh place finish at 2:09.83.

The Eagles continued their strength in the breaststroke on Sunday, adding four top-eight placements in the 200yd race. Anna Haaksma was the runner up in the event, logging a time of 2:22.94 after shaving a second and a half off her prelim time. Colette Friedley contributed with a No. 7 placement at 2:26.05.

The men were led by Jacob Haaksma in the same event. Haaksma finished at 2:07.61 for fourth place and was followed by James Gamette in sixth at 2:10.10.

Liza Parahnevich reached the podium in the 200yd backstroke on Sunday. Parahnevich scored a bronze with a time of 2:06.80. The fifth finisher for the men was Ryan Monrean with a mark of 1:55.10 and BU added Caden Drefs in seventh at 1:58.35, as he moved up a spot from prelims.

Three BU swimmers made the 100yd free final on Sunday. Tanner Smith led the Eagle pack in fourth place at 46.70, while Noah Taylor (46.97) and Alex Ness (47.43) added sixth and eighth placements.

BU swim and dive will continue their winter action on December 18 at the CSCAA Open Water Championship in North Miami, Florida.
