Hot Start Not Enough

Biola Volleyball unable to shut the door and fall 3-2 against UAA to open the 2021 season in Alaska.

ANCHORAGE, Ak. --- Biola opened up the 2021 season nearly 4,000 miles away from Chase Gymnasium in its first match of the Seawolf Invitational Thursday evening, falling to Alaska Anchorage 3-2.

The Eagles (0-1) started off hot and secured the first two sets against the Seawolves (4-1) with scores of 25-22 and 26-24. Down two sets, the Seawolves returned to the court rejuvenated, taking back-to-back wins in sets three and four at 28-26 and 25-21 to force a fifth set.

In the fifth set, the Seawolves continued their torrid run as they took an early 5-1 lead over Biola and never looked back. Biola would fall 15-8 in the deciding set to earn its first loss of the season.

While the loss was not ideal, playing with a deficit proved a good test for the Eagles as they were pushed to five sets in their first match of the season. In its first six games, Alaska Anchorage has three sweeps and has only surrendered one match to Chaminade.

Biola showed grit and fought back to win the first set 25-22 and continued their run through the second set. However, the Eagles couldn't quite complete the sweep as they allowed the Seawolves to win three straight and take the match.

Senior standouts Vanessa Garcia and Sami Hover led the Eagles on the court. Garcia completed 40 assists on the night and also contributed with her defense, logging 16 digs for the second-highest total behind Biola's libero Sami Hover who had 22 digs.

Abby Brewster joined Hover and Garcia with double-digit digs as she logged 14 digs in the five-set battle.

Three Eagles tallied double-digit kills at the net, led by Madison Beebe with 17 kills. Beebe was followed closely by Raegan Tjepkema with 13 kills and Emily Smith with 10 kills.

At the service line, the Eagles recorded nine aces; four from Hover, three from Bebee while Tjepkema and McDonnell each recorded one ace.

The Eagles are back in action and look to earn their first win on Friday evening as they take on Alaska Fairbanks at 6 P.M.
