SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- Biola Golf tied for second place with Point Loma at the PLNU Sea Lion Invitational in San Diego, California to open the 2021-22 season. Brady Turnquist earned the tournament victory while five Eagles finished in the top-15.
For the second straight season, Brady Turnquist (75-71-146) walked away with a tournament win in her first action of the season for Biola Golf. The sophomore improved on her round one total by four strokes, shooting one over par on the front-nine on day two of the PLNU Sea Lion Invitational.
"It's pretty unreal having back-to-back wins..Coming down the stretch I knew I was leading but the nerves didn't hit me until the 18th hole on my third shot," said Turnqusit.
After shooting below her standards on the front-nine, Turnquist "bounced back" to shoot two below par on the final nine holes to card a score of 71, one below par for the tournament win. What many might not know, is that Turnquist sustained an injury on Friday during a qualifier. "I persevered through this tournament mentally and physically after that injury."
After a rough opening round, Sami Penor (79-72-151) relied on her experience to card the second lowest score for the Eagles on day two. "Yesterday felt forced since I was focused on the leaderboard but today I played for a cause greater than myself and I think that's what lead to my success," said Penor who finished just one stroke behind Turnquist and was tied for seventh place on the individual leaderboard.
Like Turnquist, Penor battled through adversity as she received news that her grandmother had passed away on Monday. "I dedicated today's round to her," said Penor. "Her nickname was Momma Joy and she brought so much joy to my life, the same joy I feel when I play golf." Penor did just what she set her intentions on, honoring her grandmother while letting the the game come to her today.
After a stellar collegiate debut, Melanie Reyes' (76-76-152) consistency was on display, carding identical scores on both days of her first collegiate tournament. Reyes finished in the top 15, tied for 12th place.
Mary Grace Davidson (76-85-161) and Jessica Cornelius (84-81-165) rounded out the team scoring for Biola as Davidson tied for 31st and Cornelius improved by three strokes from round one, tying her for 42nd place.
Rachel Shaw and Lauren Lee finished back-to-back competing as individuals for Carr. Shaw (77-71-148) finished tied for third place while Lee (79-73-152) finished tied for 12th place in a field of 61 golfers.
Freshman Mailinh Vu (91-91-182) rounded out Biola's efforts in 59th.
Biola will hit the road as the Eagles head to South Jordan, Utah to compete in the Westminster Wasatch Invitational at the Glenmoor Golf Club starting on October 7.
