SAN DIEGO, Calif. ---  Biola Golf sits in second place as a team while three Eagles finish in the top-10 on the individual leaderboard after day one of the 2021-22 season opener at the Point Loma Sea Lion Invitational in San Diego, California. 

The Eagles sit just two strokes behind tournament leader Academy of Art through the first round. Biola will look to improve its rankings as the Eagles prepare for round two on Tuesday morning. 

Brady Turnquist picked up right where she left off, carding a team-best score of 75 after the first 18 holes. On the front-nine, Turnquist opened with four holes at par before sinking her first birdie of the new season. The performance was good enough to earn Turnquist a top-10 finish as she is currently tied for seventh place.

Freshman Melanie Reyes and sophomore Mary Grace Davidson were not far behind, as they joined Turnquist in the top-10 with scores of 76 tied for ninth place. 

In her first collegiate action, Reyes sank four birdies and was even on even holes. "Melanie is the only freshman representing the five player team this week and despite a rougher start on the front nine she made a tremendous comeback on the back nine to shoot one under par," commented Head Coach Jane Carr. "She carries herself with a great sense of maturity out there.  She is a tenacious tournament player and it really showed today."

Davidson logged three birdies and was just three strokes over par on the front-nine. "Mary Grace was our steady today, you need that in a fourth seeded player," said Carr. "This is a challenging course and you can quickly put up some big numbers if you aren't paying attention."  MG continued to keep the pars coming and was able to offset her bogeys with three birdies.  "MG has a great personality for the golf course because she takes everything in stride." 

Just one day after her 22nd birthday, Sami Penor finished the first nine holes two shots over but ran into some trouble in back-nine to card a score of 79. The most experienced Eagle will surely bounce back on day two as she joins five other Eagles who carded scores below 80.

Jessica Cornelius rounded out the team scoring for Biola as the sophomore carded a round of 84.

Rachel Shaw, Lauren Lee and Mailinh Vu competed as individuals for Jane Carr at the PLNU Sea Lion Invite. Shaw is currently tied for 12th while Lee is tied for 19th shooting 77 and 79 respectively.  

Freshman Mailinh Vu rounded out Biola's efforts tied for 56th. 

The Eagles are back in action on Tuesday morning as they take on day two of the PLNU Sea Lion Invitational.
