In a year defined by reaching new heights by the BU softball squad, Paige Austin added to it with a PacWest Co-Female Athlete of the Year award.

July 13, 2021

IRVINE, Calif. --- The achievements do not seem to stop when it comes to the Biola softball team, as Paige Austin nabbed the title of PacWest Co-Female Athlete of the Year.

The athlete of the year was voted on by the 11 member institutions in the PacWest. Austin was the first to pick up the PacWest Athlete of the Year distinction in school history for the Eagles. The BU pitcher was also the first softball player to win the award and tied Jaylah Walker to share the honor.

Austin's best success came in postseason play, as she propelled the Eagles to a National Championship appearance in their first year of postseason eligibility in NCAA Division II. Throughout the NCAA Regional and National competitions, Austin offered 50.2 innings with six wins, 44 strikeouts, a 1.38 earned-run average, four shutouts and 34.1-straight scoreless innings.

The senior hurler left no doubt about her impact on the season, delivering 157.1 innings for 16 wins in the circle. Austin led the conference in nearly every significant pitching statistical category, including earned-run average, opposing batting average, innings pitched, strikeouts and wins.

Incredible season numbers were favorable even on the national scale as Austin ranked amongst the top-25 in the NCAA DII in complete games (No. 24), earned-run average (No. 22), games started (No. 10), hits allowed per seven innings (No. 21) and strikeouts (No. 20).

The top award in 2021 only solidified Austin's four-year resume at Biola. The standout performer surpassed 10 wins for the fourth time, while never allowing an opposing batting average above .200 in the same span. In 2021 Austin posted career-bests in wins, starts, complete games, strikeouts and innings pitched.

Austin helped the Eagles finish the year with a 26-16 overall record, a NCAA DII West Regional Championship and an appearance and one win in the NCAA DII National Championship.
