One Last Time

Eagles stumble on senior day as they drop their final home contest of the season to Westmont College, 6-4.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Baseball mounted a comeback in the final three innings to cut the Westmont lead to two runs but ultimately fell, 6-4, in the first game of the series with Westmont on Friday.

It was the Eagles' final game of the season at home, giving BU an opportunity to celebrate its 13 departing Eagles - Kenny Carrillo, Brandon Cody, Jackson Collins, RobertAnthony Cruz, Ryan Gallegos, Jared Kapturasky, Honus Kindreich, Connor Kostecka, Jacob Portaro, Dave Ryan, Johnny Sage, Ben Smith and Caleb Watson

Westmont left-hander Cameron Phelps fired five shutout innings Friday afternoon to lead the Warriors to a 6-4 lead over Biola at Eagles Diamond.

Phelps blanked the Eagles through five innings, allowing just one hit with three walks and three strikeouts. Westmont reliever Aidan Holly surrendered three runs to Biola in the seventh and eighth inning.

Biola left-hander Larson Kindreich was charged with the loss, as he gave up four runs, two earned runs, on four hits in five innings with two walks and nine strikeouts.  Biola had plenty of opportunities to score as the Eagles fell victim to 2 double plays while stranding eight runners on base in the contest.

"Westmont pitched well against us today and really kept our hitters off balance," said BU coach Jeff Calhoon. "We knew they had good pitching, and we needed to keep the game close, but we dug ourselves into a hole early in the game. We'll look forward to the opportunity to take both games from them on Saturday."

Biola collected six hits, two from RobertAnthony Cruz while Brandon Cody, Ryan Gallegos, Caleb Watson and Connor Kostecka each recorded a hit for the Eagles. Cruz, Gallegos and Cody each added an RBI to their day.

The Warriors grabbed a 4-0 lead after scoring four runs off Kindreich. Westmont increased the advantage to 5-0 in the seventh after John Jensen reached base after being hit by a pitch and later came around to score. The run was one of two runs given up by the Biola bullpen on the day.

Senior Dave Ryan retired the only batter he faced on five pitches to get BU out of a jam in the seventh inning with one runner on base.

The Eagles took advantage of Westmont errors in the seventh as the leadoff hitter, Ryan Gallegos, reached on an error and eventually scored BU's first run on a throwing error. A single from Brandon Cody scored Ben Smith to cut the deficit to three with a score of  5-2.

Reliever Carson Cody worked around two hits in the top of the eighth to put up a scoreless inning for the 'pen and turn the momentum over to BU's bats.

After the first two BU hitters were retired in the bottom of the eighth inning, Jackson Collins reached first after being hit by a pitch. Collins advanced to second on a wild pitch and came around to score on a Gallegos single to bring Biola within two runs of Westmont, 5-3.

Senior Honus Kindreich made his second appearance of the year in the top of the ninth inning. Kindreich retired the only batter he faced as he made way for fellow senior Kenny Carrillo who was tasked with retiring the final two Westmont hitters in the frame.

Carrillo surrendered one unearned run in the frame after a throwing error allowed a runner to reach and eventually score on a double, giving Westmont the 6-3 lead. Kenny responded well and ended the inning and his senior season with a strikeout to limit the damage.

After the lead off batter was retired in the bottom of the ninth, pinch-hitter Caleb Watson reached first with a single that was lined over the reach of the jumping Westmont shortstop.
Connor Kostecka hit into a fielder's choice as Watson was retired at second and the Warriors were unable to turn two. Johnny Sage worked a walk to keep the line moving and bring up Cruz to the plate. With two on and two outs, Cruz extended the strike zone and laced a single to the opposite field to score Kostecka from second and bring BU within two, 6-4.

With the tying run at first base, senior Jacob Portaro stepped to the plate as the go-ahead run. Portaro battled from being down in the count 1-2 to work the count full but was eventually called out looking at strike three.

Biola looks to take both games from Westmont as they head up to Santa Barbara on Saturday to finish the three-game series.
