LA MIRADA, Calif. --- After dropping game one to Point Loma with a score of 11-6, Biola made sure that they split Friday's contests with the Sea Lions. The Eagles earned the walk off win over Point Loma with a Connor Kostecka single to score Tyler White in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Yet again, the bullpen faltered putting BU in a tough position to earn the win in the scheduled seven-inning game. Fortunately for the Eagles the bats continued to come through as BU was able to scratch the winning run across to earn the win.
Head Coach Jeff Calhoon was pleased with the good at bats his hitters took towards the end of the game. "The guys continued to battle and stuck with the game plan, it was nice to see it end up in a win for us," said Calhoon. "
Tyler White and
Connor Kostecka came up big in the final inning to lift up our pen, it was a great team win."
Brayden Englert and Stirlin Strong battled on the mound and had nearly identical final pitching lines. Englert pitched 5.1 innings of two run ball while striking out five and limiting the Sea Lions to only four hits while PLNU's Strong also pitched five strong innings while surrendering only two runs on three hits while striking out five. Neither starter would factor in the final decision as the game remained tied when the bullpens took over.
After a scoreless first frame, the Sea Lions scored two runs in the top of the second on a Baxter Halligan double to left field. Biola was sure to respond quickly as the Eagles plated their first two runs in the bottom of the frame. Catcher Rhett Stein singled up the middle and moved up 90 feet after Tyler White was hit by a pitch. Connor Kostecka worked a four pitch walk to load the bases for Johnny Sage who hit a sac fly to score Stein from third.
RobertAnthony Cruz was issued his first of four intentional walks in the game to load the bases for Jacob Portaro. Portaro reached first after beating out the throw on an infield single, scoring White from third and tying the contest at 2-2.
After working around trouble in the first and second innings, Englert sat down the side in order in the third, fourth and fifth innings while recording three strikeouts. Englert returned to the mound for the sixth inning and ran into immediate trouble. After walking the leadoff batter, Englert surrendered a single to put two men on with no outs.
A short visit to the mound from Head Coach Jeff Calhoon proved to be effective as Englert fielded the next ball that was put into play and elected to retire the lead runner at third base for the first out of the inning. Calhoon called on Jared Kapturasky out of the pen who retired the only two batters he faced in the inning on back-to-back strikeouts.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Johnny Sage hit a stand up double to right field and advanced to third on a fielding miscue by the Sea Lions forcing a pitching change for Point Loma. Immediately after the pitching change, PLNU elected to intentionally walk Cruz again to put runners on the corners. Portaro battled at the plate and worked a walk to load the bases for Jackson Collins.
Collins reached on an error by Point Loma's first baseman as the ball bounced in and out of his glove which would have ended the inning, instead the error proved costly and scored Sage and Cruz giving BU a 4-2 lead.
Point Loma was down but not out as Kapturasky returned to the mound in line for the win. Kap retired the leadoff hitter with a strikeout but followed that up with a walk and hit by pitch to put two on with one out forcing Calhoon to go to the pen again.
Gilbert Lopez entered in a similar situation to Kapturasky, two on and one out, this time trying to earn the save and give BU the victory. Lopez worked a quick groundout but both baserunners advanced into scoring position. With two out and two on, Otto Kemp dropped a lazy fly ball to shallow right field scoring both baserunners and tying the game 4-4.
Down to their final three outs and not wanting to play extra innings, Biola looked to be out of luck as their first two batters were retired quickly.
Tyler White stepped in the box and put up a great fight fouling off four pitches before reaching on an infield single. On the first pitch he saw, Kostecka lined a single to right field. White quickly rounded the bases and was waved home by third-base Coach
CJ Baker. A good relay gave the Sea Lions a close play at the plate but White was able to slide in just before the tag giving the Eagles the walk off win.
The win improves Biola to 6-13 on the season and 6-10 in PacWest play. The Eagles head down to San Diego on Saturday as they take on Point Loma for two more games.
