Comeback Effort Falls Short

BU women’s tennis pushed the last four singles matches to three sets but were unable to overcome No. 7 Hawaii Pacific.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- For the third time in their last four matches, Biola faced a top 20 opponent. The matchup featured the Eagles against No. 7 Hawaii Pacific on Thursday at the Biola Tennis Center.

The Sharks won the day, 4-0, but the Biola squad battled to the bitter end. Trailing 3-0, BU took a set in four singles matches before falling to HPU.

The three matches of doubles play all favored the visitors with the second court going unfinished. The No. 1 and No. 3 spots made quick work for HPU, giving the Sharks the opening point.

Momentum continued to build for Hawaii Pacific, as the singles competition began. Courts No. 1 and No. 2 notched the second and third points for HPU in straight-sets.

With their backs against the wall, BU showed its resilience down 3-0. The final four Eagles all held a lead within their match, as the team needed all four points to score the victory on Thursday.

The pressure mounted more and more the longer the match drew on, as each contest went into a third set. Mary Brascia and Marta Ruszczynska were in a nail-biter on court No. 5 with the contest deadlocked at five games apiece in the third set. Brascia, who posted a 6-0 second set to extend the match, remained focused to fight off multiple match points. Unfortunately, the effort was not enough as Ruszczynska scored the match-winner for HPU.

The two teams played to clinch on Thursday, causing the remaining matches to go unfinished. Prior to the abrupt ending, Ines Diaz and Lilly McNeill had played into an advantageous position in the third set. McNeill boasted a 5-4 lead at the conclusion of the match, as she looked for her 12th win of the season and her fifth victory in three sets.

BU (12-5) will complete its regular season on Friday with a home exhibition against Ventura.
