IRVINE, Calif. --- On Friday, BU Men's Track and Field competed in the Team for Titus Invite hosted by Concordia University Irvine. The Eagles saw plenty of top performances headlined by freshman Chase Williams and senior Noah Strenn.
Head Coach
Sean Henning was proud of the effort he saw in today's meet, especially the performance from freshman
Chase Williams who continues to get better each meet. "He competed weill and showed amazing focus and determination, especially for a freshman," said Henning. "Over all the 200 was a great event for us. We saw lots of PRs and strong conference marks."
The Eagles started off the day well taking first in the 400 relay with a time of 42:36 courtesy of Chase Williams,
Noah Strenn, Worthy Gutierrez and
Jahquez Durham. The combined effort is the fastest mark in Head Coach
Sean Henning's time at BU as the relay team was only .12 seconds shy of the school record of 42.24.
Freshman Chase Williams also notched a top two finish in the 100 dash prelims, just getting edged out by APU's Daniel Bessolo. Williams would go one to take the final heat with a time of 10.73, shaving .22 seconds off his mark from the Fresno Pacific Invite while coming back to beat Bessolo and take the heat. Williams also added a third place finish to his day in the 200 dash with a 22.23 finish, alongside teammate Noah Stern, who finished second with a time of 22.11 for a personal best.
In the 400 dash, Jahquez Durham and Strenn finished second and third giving BU two more top-three performances. Not only has Durham continued to improve with each meet but he is also a great team guy who continues to support his teammates and is committed to making this group better. Durham continues to chip away at his times ahd Henning is confident that he will be in a great spot in the next five weeks.
In the 800,
Mathias Davis, Nathan Estrada, and
Aidan Arredondo all had collegiate bests on Friday. "Mathias and Nathan were in a bit of a bumpy race where there was a lot of jostling for position," said Henning, "They handled it well and both had a good showing. We will keep working on their finishes as that was the only thing lacking on the day."
After a rough start in the high jump, Justin Conklin decided to run the 110 hurdles even though the coaching staff planned to pull him from the event due to injury concerns. Conklin proved to be healthy enough to compete and took first in the 110 hurdles prelim, with a personal best of 15:36, an improvement from his 15:50 mark at the Battle for LA on Mar. 13.
In the 5000 run, Tyler Janes finished third with a time of 15:23.19 while Nathan Vallejo also recorded a personal best for the Eagles. Janes crossed the finish line after Northwest Nazarene's Tyler Shea and CUI's Hector Arteaga. Janes rested for a total of 15 minutes before returning to action in the first 800m of the 1500. His dropout was intentional as he continues to put in extra work while preparing for a 10K next week.
Josh Ng notched a second place finish for BU in the pole vault, clearing 3.91m (12'10"). While Ng matched his second place finish from the Battle for LA, he improved on his mark by ten inches. Henning and his staff are confident that Ng has more left in the tank and will continue to raise the bar as the season progresses.
All in all, Henning and his staff are proud of what BU Men's Track and Field accomplished on Friday. "I am really excited for this next three week stretch," said Henning. "Big things are about to happen for these guys."
BU is back in action on April 3 as they head to Azusa for the APU Invitational. The Eagles will have multiple chances to compete at a familiar venue, the Cougar Athletic Stadium, as they prepare for the annual Fransen Classic & Multis on April 9-10 and the Bryan Clay Invite on April 16-17.
