SAN LEANDRO, Calif. --- It seems as if for the second-straight week Biola Women's Golf is primed to go toe-to-toe with the Point Loma Sea Lions for a team tournament title. After one round at Holy Names' Bay Area Invitational the Eagles sit three strokes back from PLNU, recording a season-best team tally of 301. It's the first time in program-history Biola Women's Golf has had five golfers shooting 77 or under.

Sami Penor was the Eagles' leading scorer on Monday shooting an even-par 72 to sit second overall in the individual leaderboard. It's the junior's sixth career round of 72 or lower. She shot two-under on the back nine to make a late charge up the leader board. Penor's five total birdies were the most among any golfers in the tournament on day one.

Senior Sophia Karnazes and freshman Mary Grace Davidson sat tied as the no. 2 Eagles on Monday. They both shot 76 to land eighth on the overall leaderboard. For Davidson, the key was her par-3 scoring as she led the tournament with an average of 2.75 on the par-3s. 

Karnazes' standout round was built by consistency, with 10 pars and comparable scoring on all types of holes regardless the length or par. She had one challenging stretch of three-consecutive bogeys on holes 8-11. Look for her to better her scoring on those holes during Tuesday's concluding round. She's in hunt for her fifth career top-10 finish.

Last week's winner, Brady Turnquist, and senior steadying force Rachel Reynolds both tied for Biola's final counting score with 77s. Both were three-over on the front nine and two over on the back nine. 

Biola's 301 is three shots back from Point Loma and six strokes ahead of Dominican headed into the final 18 holes. Point Loma also has the individual tournament leader in Raquel Prado. Prado finished second to Biola's Turnquist by one stroke last week in San Diego.

Jessica Cornelius again appeared for Biola as an individual. She shot a 78 which is a six-stroke improvement on her best round from her first collegiate tournament last week. She shot 11 pars on Monday, which was third-best for the tournament.

Round two of the tournament will take place at Monarch Bay Golf Club on Tuesday. Biola tees off at 7:39 a.m., following PLNU's 7:30 a.m. tee-time.
