Threes Can’t Do It All

Biola fought to the final buzzer but the second half went in Azusa Pacific’s favor for an 86-72 final

AZUSA, Calif. --- Biola Women's Basketball (6-3, 2-1 PacWest) competed in their first Cornerstone Cup of the season, battling neck-and-neck with Azusa Pacific from the start. Despite the Eagles tough battle against Azusa Pacific (7-1, 3-0 PacWest) the opponent capitalized in the fourth quarter to win 86-72 on Saturday afternoon at Felix Event Center.

Biola didn't allow the No. 12 ranked team in the WBCA to go very far, keeping them within six points points at the end of the first quarter. The Eagles worked together with four big threes just at the right time to keep them in a good spot against their respective opponent.

Just as above, Biola dominated in the second quarter even though they were trailing for most of the quarter. BU did their part to chip away with Sydney Moran and Laila Walker hitting back-to-back threes to bring the score to 24-26. The Eagles kept working and the bench came in hot with Natasa Radovic doing what she does best, being a strong defender and a killer on the court with rebounds.

The Eagles ended the first half in grand fashion with an 8-0 rally. The team was a perfect 3-3 from the floor in the run, as Biola took the lead with two seconds left on the clock at 38-36.

The redshirt freshman had herself a game against the rival Azusa Pacific with five big threes, as she helped Biola stay alive throughout the match. Walker reached a new season-high of 21 points, while also having five assists and two steals.

Entering in the second half in Biola's favor, this team did not let their competitor come out firing. Just like the first half, both teams came out of the gate  putting points on the board. Biola had the lead for the first five minutes of the third quarter, but APU would roll off 15 points in the back half of the quarter, thanks to five-straight possessions resulting in three points.

Walker would not let the game get out of hand, knocking down three-straight triples to go on her own 9-0 run. The late third quarter push cut the APU lead down to 60-55 with 10 minutes remaining.

Walker mentioned, "This team started out strong. We had some good times where we really competed but also faced moments where our defense stalled but found ways to get hot.Moving forward, we know what work we need to put in as a team and we will be just fine moving forward," said the redshirt freshman.

Azusa Pacific maintained its strong shooting performance in the fourth quarter, collecting a comfortable lead in the waning moments. The APU lead finally rested at 86-72 when the final buzzer rang.

Overall, the Eagles succeeded shooting the ball, as they were 4-4 from the free throw line and  were 12-26 on three-pointers., Both teams kept it clean on offense with neither team collecting 10 turnovers.

Jordan Rabe was also impressive in the win, going 10-16 from the field. The forward logged 21 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

The Eagles will return home to play against Dominican at Chase Gymnasium on December 18 at 5:30 p.m. as they look to bounce back from the loss. For live stats links and updates check athletics.biola.edu.
