Heartbreak at Home

A final second game-winner stunned the home crowd, as Dominican edged Biola.

LA MIRADA --- A strong first quarter was not enough on Saturday evening, as the Eagles (6-4, 2-2 PacWest) failed to hold off the Dominican Penguins (7-4, 4-0 PacWest). A last second heave downed the home team, Biola, in a 69-68 final.

The BU offense was cooking from the tip. In the opening 10 minutes of action, the host squad piled on 29 points and five triples, taking a 14-point lead. The team shot 63.2 percent from the floor and 71.4 percent from downtown in the first quarter with three-straight makes that started the game.

Aysia Johnson was at the forefront of the offensive surge for BU. The recent graduate scored 10-consecutive points for Biola in a 2:45 stretch in the first five minutes of the game.

Late in the first, Biola posted a 21-6 run to carry a double-digit lead into the second. In the rally, six different Eagles impacted the scoreboard.

The middle two quarters were tightly contested. DUC found a way to shave off three points from their deficit within the 20 minute stretch. The second quarter was defined by defense, as the two teams combined for 20 points, which did not surpass the point total from either team in the third period.

The decisive fourth stanza flipped the script for the game, as Dominican mounted a comeback. The visitors utilized stingy defense to force 10 turnovers and hold the Eagles to 10 points. Down by two with the final seconds waning, DUC launched a long range heave towards the hoop and found the backboard and then the bottom of the net. The three-pointer gave DUC a 69-68 lead with 0.3 on the clock. With only a tip-in available, the Eagles were unable to answer.

Four Eagles tallied double-digit points in the weekend outing. Natasa Radovic impressed off the bench with 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Amiah Simmons paced the squad in the scoring column, tacking on 15 points and seven field goals.

Laila Walker logged 11 points but made an all-around impact on Saturday. The point guard added four steals and six assists, leading the team in both categories.

Turnovers hurt the Eagles on the night with 27 giveaways leading to 24 points for the Penguins.

Biola shared the ball well, handing out 21 assists on 28 made field goals. Six Eagles dished out multiple assists on Saturday.

BU women's basketball will return to the court on December 30 at home against Concordia at 5:30pm.
