Strong Start

The Eagles have impressed through the fall season, opening the year in second place for the Commissioner’s Cup.

IRVINE, Calif. --- In the race for the 2021-22 PacWest Commissioner's Cup, BU has gotten off to a strong start. The fall season saw many successes from the Biola teams, placing the Eagles in second among the 11 PacWest schools.


The point total for Biola was 58 with its overall average between the five sports coming to 11.60 points. The only school with better results this past season was conference-leader Azusa Pacific with 60 points and a 12.00 average per sport.

The Commissioners' Cup is awarded on an annual basis to one PacWest institution. The winning institution is the team that has the best overall average point total based on the number of PacWest sports it sponsors.

The PacWest Commissioner's Cup scoring system awards points to schools based on their finishes in conference-sponsored sports. Point totals vary from sport to sport and are based upon the number of schools competing. Regular-season standings are used for baseball, basketball, soccer, softball and volleyball, while the results of the conference championships in the sports of cross country, golf and tennis.

A well-rounded effort helped the Eagles to second place in the fall, as four of the five sports tallied double-digit points. Women's cross country and volleyball led the way with 13 points and was followed closely by men's soccer (12) and men's cross country (11) and women's soccer (9). Fifteen points is the most available in any one sport and goes to the conference champion. 

Biola volleyball went 16-4 in conference play to finish second to Chaminade (17-3). Women's cross country had a fantastic conference championship meet to nab second and come within one point of scoring the conference crown.

Men's soccer (3rd) and women's soccer (5th) both finished in the top half of the conference standings to contribute as well, while men's cross country took fourth at the PacWest Championships to assist BU's total score.

The next Commissioners' Cup standings will be released following the conclusion of the winter sports season. That season includes men and women's basketball.
