Game Recap: Volleyball |

Seven Heaven

Biola wins its seventh in a row to complete a doubleheader sweep of Dominican.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Volleyball was playing on short rest for the first time probably ever on Thursday night as they took the floor for round two against the Dominican Penguins.

The Eagles and Penguins played a doubleheader due to a cancelation of a match earlier this year. This meant both teams were ready to play each other once more just 40 minutes following the conclusion of Biola's 3-0 win in match one.

The first match was career win number 500 for Head Coach Aaron Seltzer. Biola added to that tally with another straight-set victory (25-14, 25-14, 25-15) in match two, helping the coach officially reach the milestone he's been eagerly tracking.

"I'm halfway to Holmquist," jokes Seltzer. The always humble and humorous head coach was quick to take attention off himself and point it towards Biola Men's Basketball Head Coach Dr. Dave Holmquist, who currently sits at 1,002 career coaching wins.

The sweep helped Biola extend to 11-consecutive sets won, dating back to their 3-1 win over Hawaii Pacific early last week.

The Eagles depth on offense was clear from start to finish on this one as they outhit the Penguins .317 to .031 and even held the opponents to a negative attack percentage in the first game (-.069).

Biola had three different student-athletes reach double-digit kills as Dominique Kirton (11), Raegan Tjepkema (10) and Madison Beebe (10) accounted for 31 of the team's 46 kills.

The defense was just as effective in the second match of the night, as it would not allow double-digit in any single game to DUC. Biola kept the visitors to six kills, eight kills and seven kills from set-to-set.

Unlike the first match, which had some competitive moments, this second match was all Biola from the start. The Biola firepower made it tough for Dominican to sideout. The Eagles had 12 runs of three-or-more points in a row throughout the match.

An improved block had a lot to do with that as Biola out-paced the Penguins 7-3 in that category after playing dead even at 6-6 in match one.

Copeland and Tjepkema played a big part in that as they were in on four and three blocks, respectively.

Vanessa Garcia came back after getting some rest with the Eagles running with Abby Brewster and Marissa Price in match one. The senior racked up 37 assists which ties her season-high for a three-set match.

She added four kills on eight swings as her attack selection continued to be phenomenal on this night. Tjepkema was also lights out, hitting .500 on her 16 attack attempts.

The win helps Biola move to 16-7 overall and 12-3 in PacWest Conference play. The three losses is good for second in the conference, tied with Chaminade and a game up on Hawaii Hilo.

The Eagles are just behind Azusa Pacific, which has just one in the loss column but has played four fewer matches and has a challenging final stretch of games.

Up next for Biola is a Saturday matinee at home against Holy Names (6-17, 3-12 PacWest). The 3 p.m. match ends an eight-match homestand. The Eagles are off to a 7-0 start on that homestand.
