Simmons Leads BU at LMU

The short-handed Eagles used 23 points from Amiah Simmons to compete against Loyola Marymount.

LOS ANGELES --- Biola played in its second-straight exhibition on Wednesday night, travelling to Los Angeles to take on Loyola Marymount. The NCAA Division I Lions utilized an early run to create separation that would last through the fourth quarter for a 87-73 final score.

The offensive rhythm for Biola came from Amiah Simmons. The true freshman paced the Eagles in scoring for the second-straight contest, piling on 23 points in the midweek bout.

Simmons offered her best work in the fourth quarter, adding 11 points in just under eight minutes on the floor. In the period, Simmons went five-for-six from the field, while tacking on a steal, an offensive rebound and a defensive rebound.

A slow start put the Eagles on the back-foot early in the first quarter. After 10 minutes of action, LMU gathered an eight-point lead with 10 being their largest advantage.

The BU deficit swooned to 21 points with three minutes on the clock before the halftime break. A 10-2 run for Biola kept the visitors within reach at the half. Simmons tallied six points to go along with buckets from Madi Chang and Aysia Johnson to draw within 13 points with 20 minutes remaining in the competition.

The momentum stayed with the Eagles into the third quarter, as the BU squad cut the deficit to six points. A 14-5 swing in favor of Biola brought the Eagles within two scores of the hosting Lions.

"After halftime and after coming together as a team I thought we committed to our game plan more and stepped it up in the second half by playing more like ourselves," said team captain Stephanie Lee. "I thought overall we played pretty well for it being just the second game of the season."

Five different Eagles scored in the rally to put them in position for a comeback. The BU defense also held its own, keeping LMU to three treys on 27 percent shooting from long range.

Unfortunately, the surge did not last long for BU. LMU returned the favor and rebuilt its lead to finish out the 87-73 final.

Lee surpassed double digits in the scoring column on Wednesday, hitting five field goals and three free throws. The senior also grabbed four rebounds, while tallying 13 points.

For the second time this season, Natasa Radovic led the team in rebounding. The guard nabbed eight boards in the contest.

Biola will tackle its third and final exhibition on the road at Long Beach State on Tuesday at 7:00 pm.
