The BU men’s soccer squad is ready to take their talents and the message of Jesus to the next level.

November 18, 2021

WICHITA FALLS, Texas --- Biola men's soccer is set to make its first appearance on the national stage at the NCAA DII level on Friday. An impressive 2021 regular season boosted the Eagles to a selection to a NCAA Super Regional matchup against seventh-seeded Cal Poly Pomona in the opening round.

Midwestern State in Wichita Falls, Texas will play host to the Friday contest between the two California teams. The winner between BU and CPP will battle second-seeded Midwestern State on Sunday at 11:00 am PST.

"What this can mean for the men's soccer program to proclaim Jesus on a higher level is huge," said head coach Joey O'Keefe. "We have the opportunity to bring Jesus to the next stage and talk about what we really represent here at Biola."

Biola is led by its defense, boasting just 21 goals-against through the 17 match regular season. The team notched five clean sheets on the way to an 11-6-0 overall record and a 7-3-0 mark in conference play. Stout defense kept the opposition from gathering good looks at the net, as the Eagles held opponents to 67 shots on-goal through 2021.

PacWest Defender of the Year and First Team All-PacWest selection Izaac Zausch and First Team All-PacWest award-winner Lawrence Kwazema clogged up the middle for the BU defense. The highly acclaimed duo brought stability to the Biola squad throughout the 2021 campaign.

Theo Le Calve featured in the midfield for Biola, earning a PacWest Newcomer of the Year award on Wednesday. The Tulsa University transfer facilitated the offense with three assists and dominated on set pieces to accumulate a team-high six goals.

The opening round matchup between Biola and Cal Poly Pomona will be a rematch from September 11 this season. The Eagles found the edge in the 25th minute with a Pontus Gitselov score. The hosting Eagles held on for the 1-0 victory, helping the team start the season 3-0. The Broncos outshot BU 8-4 on the night but Luis Rodriguez stopped all three shots on-goal to secure the shutout.

"This is a huge opportunity to put our stamp on the national tournament ," added O'Keefe. "Cal Poly Pomona is an incredible team and I know they are fired up to play us."

The Eagles will have their chance to make their mark on the 2021 NCAA National Championships at 11:00 am PST, as they take on the Broncos at Midwestern State.
