Game Recap: Men's Water Polo |

Lions Roar In LA

Biola comes up against a sharpshooting LMU side in a WWPA loss.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- Mitchell Carpenter stopped an LMU penalty shot on the first trip down the pool for the Lions, but after that it was a tough go for Biola Men's Water Polo against No. 15 Loyola Marymount.

It was a short road trip for Head Coach Rick Nordell's squad over to the Burns Aquatic Center, where the Eagles would play their sixth Western Water Polo Association match of the 2021 year and ultimately lose the match 24-2.

After that initial penalty stop happened, LMU went on to score seven unanswered goals to open up a wide lead in the first five minutes of play.

With just over one minute left in the first period, Kenny Wulf found the back of the net during Biola's second chance with a 6-on-5 advantage. This tally kept alive the transfer's streak of 14-consecutive games with a goal.

LMU would go on another long streak of scoring, bucketing six in a row until late in the second period. The hot shooting allowed the hosts to open up to a 13-1 lead with just 17 minutes left in the game.

The Lions made 10 of their first 13 shots and ultimately would shoot over 70 percent for the game (24-for-34).

John Grasso deposited one into the back of the net for the sixth time this season to account for Biola's second goal of the game and give BU a little life heading into the halftime break.

The Lions led by a dozen at the half and added 10 more to that with a strong third and fourth quarter, holding the Eagles scoreless to the end of the game. The hosting team's powerplay efforts played a big part in their ability to pile on the goals. They scored on seven of their eight man-up opportunities in this one.

Biola had a tough time on the offensive end, scoring on just 10 percent of their shots on Saturday. The shooting percentage of .100 is about 200 points lower than the team's season-average coming into the day.

The loss drops Biola to 1-14 overall and 0-6 in conference play. Biola will get a few days to rest and get back to the drawing board before heading into a busy weekend coming up.

The Eagles head north again to face No. 8 UC Davis on Friday before squaring off with Iona, RV Bucknell, No. 12 Princeton and No. 10 San Jose State on Saturday - Sunday at the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament.
