GARDENA, Calif. --- Just a brief glance over Cami Tom's leadership positions will tell you she was a valued member of the student body at Torrance High School. 

Tom was nominated for the Tartars' Achievement Award for Leadership this past May after serving as the captain of her track and field team in 2019-20, the ASB Commissioner of Arts and Spirit in 2019-20 and the President of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes club for three years. And now she'll bring her giftings for leadership and service to Biola as she gets the chance to continue competing in the sport she loves. 

I chose Biola because of the welcoming Christian community and the respected Communication Sciences and Disorders program," said Tom. "And I am also excited to continue my pole vault career, especially since my senior season was cut short."
 
Although Tom's senior season was halted after five meets, the pole vaulter still won her event in the first three meets of her 2020 schedule and had a successful tenure overall with the Tartars. Tom won the frosh/soph Pioneer League Championship in the pole vault in 2018 and followed that up by placing in the top-five in the pole vault and long jump of the varsity Pioneer League Championships the next season. 
 
Tom came in fourth place in the long jump after competing in that event at only two meets before the league finals. And coincidentally, her field in the pole vault at the 2019 Pioneer League Championships included future Biola teammate Sophie Abe, whose senior year effort for North Torrance High placed Abe in the top-five alongside Tom. 
 
Tom also earned Most Improved, Rookie of the Year and Coaches' Awards for her performance in the track and field program across the 2018 and 2019 seasons. And she's looking forward to creating more good memories as she joins the Eagles. 
 
Academically, the Gardena-native gained membership in the National Honors Society and California Scholarship Federation during her time in high school. She plans to major in communication sciences and disorders at Biola and wants to pursue a career in speech pathology.
