Perfect Paige:
Paige Austin turned in one of the best performances of her Eagles career during Biola Softball's trip to Hawaii. The ace of Biola's staff tossed a 166-pitch, 10-inning shutout against Hawaii Pacific Sharks on March 6. The Eagles needed every bit of Paige's grit as she worked her way in and out of jams to help her team to a 1-0 victory. Austin also got a huge assist from Jennifer Morinishi in the outfield when Morinishi threw a runner out at home in the bottom of the ninth to avoid an HPU walk-off and keep the game tied. All in all, Austin struck out five and stranded a 15 baserunners, including the tying run at third base and the winning run at first base in the bottom of the 10th inning. It was the second half of a two-day span in which she threw 325 pitches and got two wins as the workhorse on the rubber for coach Nikki Udria.

Hello, Ben!:
It only took one series for first-year head coach Jeff Calhoon's Eagles to show what they were all about. After two comfortable wins against Cal State Monterey Bay to open the season, the Eagles built a 9-4 lead after five innings seeming poised to complete their sweep of an Otters team that qualified for the NCAA Regional the year prior. But the Otters came back against Biola's bullpen, knotting the score at nine and threatening for more with the bases loaded and one out in the top of the seventh. Anthony Villegas worked out of the jam with a strikeout and a groundout, and fellow reliever Josh Ludeman tacked on two scoreless innings to keep the game tied heading into the bottom of the ninth. That set the stage in the bottom of the ninth for Ben Smith, playing his third game in a Biola uniform after transferring inin January. On a 1-0 pitch the catcher smashed the ball over the fence in left-center field to give the Eagles a 10-9 victory and the series sweep over Monterey Bay. It was simultaneously Smith's first collegiate homerun and first ever walk-off hit. And it was instrumental in vaulting Biola Baseball to No. 2 in the region and No. 14 in the nation when the first rankings of the season were released.
