MANTECA, Calif. --- Fresh off a stellar high school career, Matthew Trejo is ready to make a new swimming home with Biola Swim & Dive. 

Trejo was a three-time varsity team MVP at Manteca High School in addition to winning two junior varsity CIF Sectional events as a freshman. His 500-freestyle personal best (4:35.78) already beats one of the longest-held marks in the Biola men's swimming record book (Erik Sirjord swam the 500-free in 4:36.62 at the 2013 NAIA nationals). And Trejo's top times in other events also put him within striking distance of additional records as he joins a team that will continue to push itself to new heights after posting a program-best finish at the PCSC Championships in 2020. 

Additionally, Trejo has competed at the Speedo Winter Sectionals and Futures with Ripon Aquatics and served as a team captain. Consequently, joining a positive and compelling team culture was extremely important to Trejo and was critical in his commitment to Biola:

"I decided to choose Biola because as soon as I was on campus, the team made me feel right at home," said Trejo. "I am beyond excited to be part of a team who centers around Christ and to compete under the guidance of Coach Ryan and Coach Jenel Lopez."

Trejo's accomplishments outside of the pool are just as impressive. He has maintained honor roll status throughout high school by excelling in honors and AP courses, has earned a seal of biliteracy in English and Spanish, and participated in a medical pathways program at high school that placed Trejo in a hospital as part of one of his classes. He intends to apply for acceptance into Biola's nursing program and hopes to work as a pediatric or orthopedic nurse one day. 

Trejo also enjoys giving swim lessons over his summers and playing the ukulele and piano in his free time.

He'll join his new teammates in the coming fall semester as Swim & Dive prepares for the start of its 2020-21 season in October. More information on the incoming 2020-21 class that will join him at Biola can be found on the Committed Athletes page.
