Last Game Letdown

Biola gets to play but comes up short in finale against HPU, 7-2.

KANEOHE, Hawaii --- Biola and Hawaii Pacific nearly didn't get to play on Saturday to close out the series. The game got in, which is great, but unfortunately for the Eagles for the first time in the series something did not go their way.

Biola allowed a five-run inning to the hosting Sharks in the bottom of the third inning, and that went on to make all the difference in a downer of a 7-2 loss to end the series.

Head Coach Nikki Udria's team still ended up winning three of the four in the series and has a gleaming 6-2 record headed into the last four contests of this PacWest Conference road trip, but it's always hard to go in with hopes of a series sweep and come out upended.

Unfortunately for Biola, the bats hit into several inning-ending double plays and the Hawaii Pacific team played almost perfect outfield defense to kill several offensive rallies for BU.

Biola was able to wiggle out of some trouble of its own, but nothing was slowing down HPU in that decisive fifth inning. The Eagles had just taken a 2-1 lead in their half of the inning and Jennifer Morinishi seemed primed to keep rolling in the circle, but an aggressive Hawaii Pacific offense paid dividends for the hosts.

HPU managed to get its first seven base runners on board via a combination of five singles, an error and a bad decision on a fielder's choice. Those first seven batters were enough to get all five runs across and make it 6-2 HPU with still two runners on and nobody out.

Morinishi got a lineout, popout and flyout to escape the inning with no further damage done, but what happened was enough to get the Sharks out in front enough for the win.

Biola had runners on base in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh, but could not find a way to push anyone home against the Sharks' starter who picked up a complete game win. HPU extended the lead to 7-2 on a dropped fly ball in the sixth and set BU down in order in the top of the seventh to close out the game.

Caitlin Fowble had a solid game, getting a chance to start the game at designated player. The sophomore finished with a pair of hits in her three at-bats. Kylie Velasco also continued her fantastic run of play. She was also 2-for-3, had an RBI and now has two or more hits in three of the last four games.

BU was outhit 12-7 in the loss and will quickly shake this one off as it heads back to the other side of the island for a four-game set against Chaminade (2-6, 0-6 PacWest). After this HPU series Biola sits at 15-4 overall and 10-2 in PacWest play.

Before the team gets there it has Sunday off and will get a chance to visit a church in Honolulu in what will be sure to be a highlight of the trip.

Game one at Chaminade is Monday, March 9 at 6:30 p.m. PT.
