Velasco Takes RBI Lead In Win

Kylie Velasco drives in three of Biola's four runs in 4-2 series-opening win.

March 09, 2020

Box Score WAIPAHU, Hawaii --- Biola began its series with Chaminade just as it expected, with a bit more of spark on offense and a win. Behind another great performance by Paige Austin, the Eagles scored three in their half of the fourth inning to spark a 4-2 victory.

The Silverswords led at two points throughout the game and got plenty of base runners, but the three-run inning for Biola is what seemingly put the game to rest in Biola's favor.

Chaminade had its leadoff runner reach in the first inning, second inning and third inning, but then spotted Biola early outs in the fourth, sixth and seventh. The Silverswords managed to manufacture single runs in the first inning and third inning, but they stranded nine runners over the course of the rest of the game.

Austin had her strikeout stuff going, which was really helpful to combat the regular base runners. She struck out three in a row in the second inning and back-to-back in the fifth to power her eight K day.

Biola also struggled with standing base runners, but the fact that BU managed six walks and seven hits was a welcome sight for an offense that had been struggling a bit as of late. That number of walks is the most for Biola all season. Biola hadn't had more than three walks in its last 13 games.

The Eagles answered Chaminade's bottom of the first inning run with one of their own to tie things up in the third. Jennifer Morinishi was right at the middle of that, launching the rally with a one-out double, stealing third and scoring on a Kylie Velasco single.

The 'Swords came right back with a second run off Austin in the bottom of the third inning. Biola uncharacteristically saw two defensive lapses in that inning, which created the opportunity for CUH to pick up a run. The leadoff runner reached on an error, and that very same runner remained safe for the 'Swords on a poor fielder's choice later in the inning. As you may expect, that same runner came around to score on a sacrifice fly one batter later.

It didn't take long for the Eagles to answer and go out and win the game. Sicili Brittingham, who reached in all her plate appearances in this one, began the fourth-inning rally with a walk. She stole second base straight up and then was moved to third on a single up the middle from Kiana Meriales.

Brittingham came home to tie the game up when the Silverswords' third-baseman booted a Ruth Munoz batted ball. The inning really opened up a bit later on in the inning when a Kylie Velasco single drove in two runs and made it 4-2.

That score would hold as the final as Austin was completely locked in over the final three innings, and her defense cleaned things up as well.

Morinishi, Velasco and Brittingham combined for six of Biola's seven hits. Velasco's three RBI led the team's effort and put her back in front as the team's leader with 19 RBI this season.

Biola improved to 16-4 overall and 11-2 in PacWest Conference contests with the win. The two teams have one more scheduled for Monday with game two starting at about 8:30 p.m. PT.
