Brittingham Blasts BU Past 'Swords

A four-hit game from Sicili Brittingham makes for an emphatic end to Hawaii trip.

WAIPAHU, Hawaii --- A big blast by Sicili Brittingham, clutch hits by Caitlin Fowble and Kiana Meriales and another dominant start from Paige Austin highlighted a successful final game of Biola Softball's 2020 Hawaiian road trip.

Austin went the distance and allowed just three total hits in holing Chaminade off the board and allowing Biola a 3-0 victory to take three of four from the Silverswords. The win made Biola 9-3 total on its road trip, the Eagles were the only SoCal team to play all 12 games of their trip.

With the big win, the Eagles improve to 13-3 in PacWest Conference contests this season, leading the league with quite the buffer as they head home to host Dominican (7-10, 4-2 PacWest) next week.

Brittingham's big fly in the fourth inning was just Biola's third homerun of the season. It came off Chaminade's ace and last night's winning pitcher, Madelyn Stockslager. It was the first big fly allowed by Stockslager this season.

The leadoff homerun began a two-run fourth inning for Biola, which saw another run cross home plate after small ball and good base running again paid dividends for BU. Rilee Ruvalcaba worked a five-pitch walk, moved up on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a groundout to the right side.

Finally, after extending her at-bat with a foul ball on a 1-2 pitch, Kiana Meriales managed a base hit to drive Ruvalcaba home and plate the third and final run of the game.

Caitlin Fowble was the one with the productive groundout to move Ruvalcaba to third. She had an RBI base hit earlier in the ballgame to help Biola take the lead back in the second inning.

Austin had one of her best efforts of the season as she baffled Chaminade hitters, despite it already being her third appearance in the series. She had eight strikeouts, with half of those catching the hitters looking. She allowed just three hits, all singles, and only had three runners in scoring position all game with none in scoring position past the fourth inning.

Austin improved to 12-1 on the year by picking up the win. She got her opponent's batting average against down to .194 in her two outings on Tuesday.

Brittingham was definitely the story of the game on the offensive side, recording a 4-for-4 effort while scoring two of the three runs. She's the only Eagle this season to manage four hits in a game. She's reached base in five consecutive games played, which is the longest streak on the team right now.

Biola returns to the mainland with an 18-5 overall record and the 13-3 mark in the PacWest Conference. The Eagles are able to take some time to breathe after traveling home on Wednesday. Their next contest is the home series against Dominican scheduled for this coming Tuesday and Wednesday, March 17-18.
