Shocking Conclusion Clouds Day One

Biola suffers improbable walk-off loss to Chaminade in the nightcap.

WAIPAHU, Hawaii --- Biola cruised through game one and seemed prime to complete the doubleheader sweep with a go-ahead run crossing home plate in the top of the seventh, but Chaminade shocked the Eagles in the bottom half with a pair of one-out runs to win via walk-off.

Neither team could get much going all game, thanks to fantastic starting pitching performances from Paula Damas and Chaminade's Madelyn Stockslager. Stockslager hung around the strike zone all evening, striking out five Eagles and walking none while holding BU to just three total hits through the first six innings.

Biola got a trio of seeing-eye singles in the top of the seventh to manufacture the go-ahead, and what the Eagles thought to be game-winning run. Kiana Meriales took a 1-2 pitch the other way and got a blooper to fall in right field to score Sicili Brittingham.

The ball went back to Damas for the seventh. She gave up a single and a walk to begin the frame, but seemed back on track when she got a popped-up bunt and lightly hit ground ball to second base out of the third and fourth batters of the inning.

Unfortunately, the second-base umpire ruled that no Biolan touched the second-base bag and runners were safe at all three bases with just one out in the inning.

Damas was pulled in favor of Jennifer Morinishi to try and halt all runners right where they are. Morinishi worked ahead of her first batter, 0-2, and threw her fifth pitch right on the outside corner, but didn't benefit from a called strike three. Instead, she would walk home the game-tying runner and then a Chaminade single through the left-hand side would deliver Chaminade its improbable walk-off win.

The 2-1 victory is the first PacWest Conference win in eight tries for the Silverswords. The loss to Damas is also her first of the year. Stockslager earned a win for the first time this year. She had been 0-3.

Biola had just six total base runners in the second game and lost one of those to a caught stealing play. That's what will have to change on Tuesday if Biola wants to end its Hawaiian road trip with a pair of wins.

The loss drops the Eagles to 16-5 overall and 11-3 in PacWest play. Chaminade improves to 3-7 (1-7 PacWest). The two teams play Biola's last games of its trip on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. PT.

Biola remains in first place in the league standings despite the loss, but the advantage narrows to just one game in the loss column, but still around six games overall.
