Too Quiet Early On

Biola Baseball took its first loss of the year after it was unable to overcome CSU San Bernardino’s five-run first.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- A number of things happened at Eagles Diamond on Saturday that demonstrated how strange and peculiar the game of baseball can be at times.

The middle innings saw several plays that could have been hits or errors. Biola's Connor Kostecka was one of a few batters who hit the ball on the screws several times throughout the game and still came out hitless. And the team that averaged over three extra-base hits per game at the start of the day, Biola, got a solitary double while Cal State San Bernardino nearly doubled their extra-base hit total from five to nine on Saturday.

Three of the Coyotes' extra-base hits came in a big top of the first inning that saw the visiting team score five runs on a run-scoring triple, double and two-run homerun. Head Coach Jeff Calhoon's team responded by loading the bases with two out in the bottom half. and scored a run on a Mark Stanford walk. But the two runs Biola scored over the first three innings did not close the deficit enough to help the home team turn the game around.

Cal State San Bernardino scored six more runs between the fifth, sixth and eighth innings to give Biola its first loss of the year by a score of 11-2.

The Eagles left a total of 11 men on base throughout the game as they tried to mount a comeback in the middle innings. After Stanford's RBI walk, DH Ryan Gallegos led off the third inning with a double and eventually scored on a two-out throwing error. But Biola struggled to extend innings and put crooked numbers on the scoreboard, even with the Eagles recording a hit in each of the first six innings.

Tyler Baca had the best day at the plate as he recorded Biola's only multi-hit game of the afternoon. The sophomore outfielder has solidified his spot in the leadoff position with three-straight games with two or more hits and at least one run scored in all five contests Biola has played this season.

Ben Smith and RobertAnthony Cruz also reached on singles to extend their hitting streaks to three on Saturday.

But the Coyotes just scored runs when they needed them to put the game away and always kept the Eagles chasing.

Honus Kindreich and Tyler Mead did have good appearances on the mound for Biola. Kindreich gave up his first earned run at home in two years. But had his second long outing of 2.2 innings in as many appearances to act at Biola's stopgap. Mead showed a good fastball and recorded three groundouts to toss a scoreless ninth.

The Eagles have a big week ahead of them with five games in a three-day stretch. Up first is a single game Thursday at Eagles Diamond against Colorado Christian at 2 p.m.
