Can’t Ask For More

Biola Baseball needed only five hits to win because the Eagles pitchers tossed nine shutout innings.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It may not have been the old-fashioned variety of a pitchers' duel, but Thursday's game at Eagles Diamond endeared itself with great defense and quality performance from Biola's pitchers as the Eagles topped Colorado Christian 2-0.

Credit is due for the way Biola mixed its relievers throughout the contest and varied left and right-handers to keep the visiting Cougars' off balance. But the fact that the staff didn't give up an extra-base hit and only surrendered two walks showed that they all successfully passed the baton and performed well.

Andrew Beauvais gets his first win in an Eagle uniform after being the pitcher of record when Biola took a 1-0 lead in the sixth. Biola is now 5-1 on the year as Head Coach Jeff Calhoon's group heads into back-to-back doubleheaders against UC Colorado Springs on Friday and Saturday.

The afternoon started with an easy 1-2-3 inning for starter David Ryan that was completed in just six pitches. Ryan got into a bit of a jam in the second with two runners on and one out. But an easy flyout and a spectacular diving catch with the bases loaded from Tyler Baca got the Eagles out of the frame unscathed and started Ryan's tenure at Biola with a 0.00 ERA.

Tyler Mead found himself in a similar situation in the top of the fourth after the first two men he faced got base hits. But Mead buckled down to strikeout third baseman Wyatt Crenshaw on three pitches, all swinging, and then got a serious assist from his inflied.

The next batter also swung as the first pitch he saw from Mead and hit a slow roller down the third-base line that Jacob Portaro pounced on. After firing it to second base, RobertAnthony Cruz completed a tough turn with a run bearing down on him and the figurative clock ticking. The 5-4-3 double play stranded another man on and also gave Mead two scoreless innings in his outing on Thursday.

It took two more innings for the Eagles to scratch across the first run of the game, but it turned out to be all they needed. Portaro's double in that frame pushed Ryan Gallegos to third base after the DH was hit by the new reliever. Then senior outfielder Andy Van Antwerp did his job and skyed the ball to left field to plate Gallegos on the sac fly.

RobertAnthony Cruz provided insurance two innings later by punishing a fastball out over the plate for a solo homerun. Then Honus Kindreich pushed the door shut on his second save of the year with a 1-2-3 ninth.

One has to expect Kindreich to be available on Friday if the Eagles need him since he only threw 12 pitches in the 2-0 win. Biola starts the first doubleheader against UCCS at 11 a.m.
