Kindreich K’s 12 In Win

Larson Kindreich strikes out 12 in seven shutout innings and Ryan Gallegos goes 3-for-4 in Biola’s 4-2 victory.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. --- Biola Baseball became the first team in the PacWest to win its fourth game on Friday, riding another dominant performance from Larson Kindreich and a two-out rally in the fifth inning to a 4-2 victory over Cal State San Bernardino.

The Eagles' first road win of the year helps Biola to a 4-0 start to the season for the second-straight year. Head Coach Jeff Calhoon's group also recorded 11 hits for the third time in four games this season while Kindreich starts his year with a scoreless streak of 13 innings.

The sophomore lefthander just got better as the night went on to improve to 2-0 on the year. He stranded five runners on base over his first four innings of work and left the bases loaded in the third after he induced a groundout to Jacob Portaro. But he retired six batters in a row to end his start and struck out the final four batters as fatigue added additional movement to his pitches.

The 12 strikeouts Kindreich finished with is a new career-high and the two hits allowed is a new personal best over starts that last five innings or longer.

The Biola bats finally broke through against starter Blake Timm when they got their third looks at him in the fifth inning. Connor Kostecka started the frame with a single as he recorded hits in his first two at-bats. But Kostecka had to wait until leadoff Tyler Baca tripled with two out to bring home Biola's first run of the game.

Two batters later, Ryan Gallegos provided Biola's only other extra-base hit of the game with a double to right center that plated two more and continued the two-out rally. But the Eagles might not have succeeded in that position had they not recorded six hits over the first three innings to get comfortable against Timm and keep the lineup moving.

Gallegos provided an insurance run with an RBI single in the seventh that gave him a 3-for-4 line score with three RBI's. Baca and Kostecka joined the DH with multi-hit games while the two-out rallies during the game pushed the Eagles batting average with two outs to .316 through four games.

Gilbert Lopez took care of the final two innings in relief of Kindreich and retired the side in order during his first inning of work. Andy Van Antwerp also played a key supporting role with a diving catch for the second out of the sixth that forced the outfielder into full extension in right center and earned cheers from the spectators in San Bernardino.

Biola and CSU San Bernardino will turn around quickly to conclude their two games set at Eagles Diamond. The teams will meet again on Saturday at 1 p.m.
