Spreading The Love

Biola Women’s Basketball dishes out 21 assists and everyone contributes in a 84-51 win over Holy Names.

OAKLAND, Calif. --- Biola Women's Basketball was engaged in every phase of the game during Thursday's win over Holy Names University. The Eagles didn't get their first field goal until three minutes into the game, but that would not slow them by the time the final buzzer sounded.

Biola scored 80 points for the second time in the last three games, saw five women score in double figures and had every player pull down at least two rebounds in the 84-51 win. That is on top of the Eagles tying their season-high with 21 assists dished out by eight members of Head Coach Alan Nakamura's group.

"They shot the ball well and kept pushing it until the end," said senior forward Mikayla Greens. "We moved the ball like a team tonight; everyone touched the ball. And our defense was better in the second half. We talked on the bench and said we needed to pull together and defend and rebound better."

The Eagles move into a tie for third place in the conference and a game and half up on fourth-place point Loma after recording their sixth win by 25 points or more on Thursday. At 15-7, 11-5 PacWest, and with six conference games still remaining, Biola also matches its single-season high for conference wins as an NCAA DII program.

The Eagles got rolling once Jelissa Puckett drained a three-pointer for Biola's first bucket of the game and didn't let up after that. Puckett and the other members of the starting five went on a 14-0 run to take a 13-point lead in the first and then Madi Chang took centerstage in the second quarter to lead the team to a 24-point period.

The freshman forward dominated by making her first five shots in the quarter and led the team with 11 points going into halftime. Chang would make her next field goal attempt and all three of her free throws on the night to lead the Eagles in scoring until late in the third quarter with another new career-high for her.

She finished with 15 points on 6-for-7 shooting as she, Stephanie Lee (16 points) and Jordan Rabe (two points) combined for the 33 points Biola got from substitutes, and accounting for the Eagles margin of victory on Thursday.

Chang's dominance around the key opened things up for a number of her teammates to score in bunches themselves in the second half. Stephanie Lee led the way with 11 points and seven rebounds in the second half alone. Puckett and Greens added eight each and Tatum Brimley scored seven to go with three steals.

Last, but not least, Jazz Benn scored a total of 11 points on the night to give her 300 made field goals in her career, was one of four women with six boards and led the Eagles with five assists. She raised her points per game average to 10.1, giving Biola four women on the roster who score an average of 10 or more a game: Benn, Brimley, Danita Estorga and Lee.

The Eagles will conclude their short road trip on Saturday afternoon when they face Academy of Art in San Francisco. Tipoff is schedule for 1 p.m.
