Hits Of All Kinds

Biola Baseball gets five hits and has a program-record eight hit-by-pitches in the 4-1 win over UH Hilo.

HILO, Hawaii ---After Ryan Gallegos burned the Vulcans for a two-run homerun on a pitch out over the plate in game one, Hawaii Hilo didn't want to take their chances in game two of the series-opening doubleheader.

Biola's DH was hit by four pitches as the Vulcans tried to bust him inside. And UH Hilo hit a total of eight batters in game two as the Eagles earned a 4-1 victory in a seven-plus inning game abbreviated by rain.

"I'm proud of the way the guys competed today. We talk about controlling what we can control and not worrying about the rest," said Head Coach Jeff Calhoon's. "The guys and assistants coaches did a great job staying ready with the delay for game two and coming out of the gate ready to compete."

Calhoon's group scored a run in each of the first four innings to build a picket fence that kept the Vulcans at bay. The Eagles executed another double steal from the corners to score Tyler Baca in the first. Then Baca drove in Cole Beemer in the second on a two-out double down the left field for a 2-0 lead.

Andy Van Antwerp would be involved in his team's runs over the next two frames with a flyball in the second that eventually allowed Gallegos to score on a throwing error. Then Van Antwerp was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fourth to make it 4-0.

The Vulcans simply couldn't get anything going on offense until that third inning. Starting pitcher Larson Kindreich struck out five in three innings of scoreless work without allowing a hit. With his second out in the bottom of the third inning, Kindreich became the Eagles' NCAA-Era record holder for consecutive scoreless innings with now 23 consecutive scoreless innings to start his 2020 season. He passes Biola closer Daniel Jang, who threw 22.1 scoreless innings in 2018.

Hawaii Hilo scratched across a run against Andrew Bauvais. But it came across on the very play that Beauvais drew a doubleplay ball to get the first two outs of the inning. Beauvais retired the next seven batters in a row and pitched the last 4.2 innings of the game while allowing just two hits

He induced a total of five ground balls as well of the night, two of which resulted in GDP's.

Having tough at-bats and working into their bullpen really early helped us," said Calhoon. "And Beauvais did a great job bridging until the game was called following Larson. I also am really proud of Larson being able to continue to stay in his zone and execute pitches today in his outing."

Three of Biola's five hits on the game were doubles and the eight hit batters is the most Biola Baseball has ever had in program history. The previous time was five and the Eagles tied that mark in a game at Hilo on March 2, 2018.

Andrew Beauvais improves to 2-0 on the season as Biola Baseball raises its overall record to 11-1. The Eagles will carry a seven-game win streak into the second doubleheader of the series on Saturday, weather permitting.
