Win And Come Home

Biola Baseball concludes its Hawaii trip with a doubleheader split against HPU and a 1-1 PacWest record.

WAIPAHU, Hawaii --- The Biola Eagles didn't hide the feeling that they shouldn't have let game one of Thursday's doubleheader slip away.

Even with Larson Kindreich allowing just two unearned runs and striking out eight over seven innings, the Eagles still lost their first road game of the year by a 2-1 score. But then Head Coach Jeff Calhoon's group let out their frustration in game two with seven runs over the first three innings to win 10-2 and earn a split with the Sharks.

No. 9 Biola is now 12-2 overall and 1-1 to start PacWest play. It has yet to be determined when the two conference games that were postponed on Wednesday will be made up.

Ryan Gallegos got the Eagles off on the right foot in game one with a solo homerun that put his team up 1-0. Gallegos would smash another roundtripper in game two of the doubleheader to give the junior four homeruns in his last five games. But Hawaii Pacific's starter Shane Adams would settle in after the solo shot and allow just more three hits over his 6.1 innings of work.

Kindreich pitched really well despite the Eagles surrending two unearned runs in the third inning. The sophomore left-hander went seven innings for the fourth time this season, stranded a total of five base runners over his last three innings, and struckout six members of the Sharks batting order.

But Biola bats couldn't get anything going against a fatigues Adams or reliever Grant Dragmire in game one.

Game two was a different story from the start, as Hawaii Pacific was forced to remove its starting pitcher after four of Biola's first five hitters reached safely.

Ben Smith and Andy Van Antwerp both provided run-scoring base hits in the first. Then the two-run homer from Gallegos and a two-run single from RobertAnthony Cruz basically put the seven-inning game out of reach after two and a half.

The Eagles would score in every-other inning as they chalked up 10 runs for the third time this year. and the second time while in Hawaii

Senior Kenny Carrillo got the start in the shortened contest and threw three scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Joey Leavitt got all six of his outs via the K while allowing just one run and earned his second victory of the year. And Honus Kindreich and Josh Ludeman made their first appearances of the trip to record the final five outs while facing a combined six batters.

Overall, it was a successful trip for Biola when it actually got to play baseball, as the Eagles went 3-1 between Hilo and Waipahu. The Biola Boys are scheduled to have next week off and then will host Point Loma four two doubleheaders on Friday March 13 and Saturday March 14.
