Eagles Bring The Thunder

Biola Baseball hits four homeruns and scored 10 unanswered runs to beat Hawaii Hilo in game one.

HILO, Hawaii --- It's been raining a lot in Hilo since No. 12 Biola Baseball arrived on Thursday and more downpours were interspersed throughout Friday's game one of the non-conference series scheduled between the Eagles and the University of Hawaii at Hilo Vulcans.

But Head Coach Jeff Calhoon's group added some thunder to all that rain during game one's 10-6 win, as four Eagles belted homeruns and Biola scored its 10 runs unanswered.

Outfielder Brandon Cody had a successful return to the lineup after missing a few weeks, going 2-for-5 with an HR and two RBI's. Jacob Portaro recorded three extra-base hits all by himself with two doubles and a homerun, and he and three other Eagles had multi-RBI games to help Calhoon's crew to a 10-1 record and their sixth-straight win.

It was actually the Vulcans that had the early offense in this one, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning on four hits. But three walks from the Vulcans starter before the second out, RBI's from Connor Kostecka and Cody, and a double steal that plated Jackson Collins led Biola to even the score on just one hit.

Cody came up two innings later and drove a homerun over the right-field fence to put the Eagles up 4-3. Portaro and Jackson Collins added run-scoring hits in the fifth. Then Kostecka smashed his first homer of the year to start the train of long balls for the Eagles.

Ryan Gallegos and Portaro went back-to-back with jacks in the eighth to push Biola to 10 runs, making this the second time the Eagles have reached double digit runs in 2020.

On the defensive side of things, the biggest story was reliever David Ryan, who stranded two inherited runners with popouts when he entered the game in the third inning. Ryan held the Vulcans scoreless over his first five innings of work and was unfortunately tagged for a few runs before his ledger was closed. But he was credited with his first win as an Eagle after allowing just four hits.

"Dave Ryan did an outstanding job of coming in and pitching quality innings for us today," said Coach Calhoon.  "It was also great to have Brandon back in the lineup and see him have some success at the plate. Overall, I also thought we did a good job of winning the war for free bases on the base paths as a group and that proved to be the difference."

Tyler Mead came in and got three bigs out in the ninth after UH Hilo drew within four runs. Mead's comfortable margin was preserved the inning before by a well-placed first pitch fastball from Bentley Acee that induced an easy popup with the bases loaded.

The Eagles are scheduled to play three more games with the Vulcans, weather permitting.
