Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

All The Wright Stuff

Led by Alex Wright, Biola knuckles down and causes disturbance in PacWest Conference seeding.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Although the result of Thursday night's regular-season finale didn't mean anything in terms of Biola's seeding in next week's PacWest Conference tournament, it could be a big, big blow to the visiting Concordia Irvine Eagles.

All season long, CUI has seemed primed to be the tournament's no. 3 seed, but following no.5-seed Biola's 77-63 senior night victory, CUI now needs a win Saturday night vs. Azusa Pacific in keep itself in that third spot.

If CUI fails to beat the PacWest Champion Cougars, then Concordia Irvine and Biola will go toe-to-toe once more in one week's time to tip-off the PacWest Conference tournament at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday, March 5.

Ken Ammann's Concordia Eagles most certainly would not want to see that happen, particularly with the way things shook out tonight with Head Coach Dr. Dave Holmquist's team leading for 39:22 and never once trailing in this one.

Biola worked a 14-point win, which is a flip-flop of 22 points from the last time these two sides got together, back in January in Irvine. It was BU's first men's basketball victory over CUI since Feb. 22, 2014. Concordia Irvine had racked up eight in a row against these Eagles, including all five previous matchups in the PacWest Conference era.

Tonight's victory was straightforward. Biola shot the ball well, chose the right shots and rebounded the ball fantastically, especially on the defensive end. BU had 31 defensive boards, while CUI managed just 18 (thanks in part to Biola's shooting the rock at a 52 percent clip).

Biola held CUI to just a 34 percent shooting mark (22-for-64), which meant a big victory despite the visiting Eagles having 11 more chances from the field. The 34 percent shooting effort is the second-lowest of the season for CUI. Their road game at Azusa Pacific was the only lower time out.

Biola also shot the ball a smidge better from the free-throw line. Concordia missed seven shots to go 14-for-21, while BU was a solid 75 percent from their chances at the stripe.

The home team reached the 20-assist plateau for the just the second time this season, but that certainly did not come without its troubles, as the team also chalked up 20 turnovers for the first time this year.

Rossow tied his career-high (set at Southwest Baptist) with 11 assists on the night. He contributed five of the team's 20 turnovers as a result of trying to keep that impressive ball movement going.

Four of Rossow's 11 dimes helped set up some scoring for the game's two leading scorers - Alex Wright and Michael Bagatourian. Wright was 8-for-12 for a nifty 21 points and added six rebounds to round out his numbers. Bagatourian was 6-for-9 and went 7-for-9 from the free-throw line to build up to 19 points. He had a double-double, number seven for him this year, with 10 rebounds.

Rossow also had a double-double, his first of the year, because of his 12 points to go along with the 11 assists. Jesse Elrod gave it an even triple in terms of double-doubles, as he chipped in 10 rebounds and 13 points. He also threw down a one-handed slam dunk for the third-consecutive home contest.

The win went in honor of senior Marquise Mosley, who appeared in Chase Gymnasium for the last time this season. Unfortunately, the Eagles' regular starting PG is hung up with injury, but still had his moment to stand with his family before the Biola faithful and take a bow. He ends his career with over 2,000 minutes played, 600 points and 150 assists.

Biola improves to 17-11 (13-9 PacWest) with the win. The team went 12-3 in games at Chase Gymnasium this season. It preserves a streak of 25-consecutive seasons with a home record of .500 or better. This includes 23 seasons of 10+ home wins.

Next up for the Eagles is either Concordia (currently 20-10, 14-7 PacWest) or Chaminade (17-10, 15-7 PacWest) at the PacWest tournament. The tournament is hosted at Azusa Pacific. Look for more information next week.
