Just What They Needed

Biola Men’s Tennis got the three singles wins it needed from the top three flights to defeat Redlands, 5-4.

REDLANDS, Calif. --- Head Coach David Goodman's men's tennis team traveled to Redlands on Friday to face a skilled NCAA Division III side in the Redlands Bulldogs.

The home team came into the match ranked the No. 18 team in the nation for DIII and had somewhat of a home court advantage given the slight rule changes in DIII tennis (first to eight games in doubles and each decision in the dual match counting as a point). But visiting Biola took care of business in doubles and singles, thanks to some late heroics from Logan Blair, to earn a hard fought win by a 5-4 score.

Even with the finish line being pushed two games further out on Friday, Biola still won two doubles decisions, a feat the Eagles have accomplished in five of their first six matches of the year. Andres Meneses and Blair opened up the scoring in the dual match with an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles while Quentin Lau and Derek James gave their team a 2-1 lead headed into singles play.

The doubles win gave the tandems of Meneses/Blair and Lau/James back-to-back wins while the former now has a team-best four victories so far on the season.

Turning to singles, Alexei Prokopchuk continued his torrid start to his tenure with Biola with another straight-set win at No. 1 to secure Biola's third point. Prokopchuk is now 5-1 on the year as the No. 1 and has won four of those matches without needing to go to a third set.

Redlands made the dual interesting with wins on courts four, five and six. But team veterans James and Blair surged back after dropping their respective first sets and carried Biola to a comeback victory.

James simply ironed out his game plan after the first set, winning the next two stanzas 6-3, 6-1 to grab his second three-set win in the past three matches. Blair also had a 6-3 win in his second set, but his third was much harder.

The Oregon-native had to play through a tiebreak as the deciding match of the dual and won the first breaker he played this season to secure Biola's third win of the season.

"I'm really proud of our teams for bouncing back from some tough losses of late," said Head Coach David Goodman. "Our teams showed some heart and big determination to win these matches today."

Weather permitting, Biola intends to host Sonoma State at the Biola Tennis Center on Saturday. Keep up to date with the Biola Athletics twitter account to ensure you are aware of any changes to the start time.
