Talk About Quick Work

Biola Men’s Tennis needed just an hour and 31 minutes to dispatch Hope International by a 4-1 score.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The men's tennis matches between Biola and Hope International are always entertaining because they pit two teams against each other that really want to beat this particular opponent.

And especially in light of HIU's win at the Biola Tennis Center a year ago, Head Coach David Goodman's group had an extremely satisfying outcome on Tuesday, beating the Royals 4-1 in just over an hour and a half.

Being the major difference in the roster between last year's matchup and this, Biola's Alexei Prokopchuk had a banner day for the Eagles that concluded with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles. But the Ukrainian's day started with a 6-4 doubles win with partner Edwyn Ramos that clinched the opening doubles point after Derek James and Quentin Lau made quick work of their opponents at No. 3.

The Eagles had early success on a number of courts when played turned to singles. But Prokopchuk set the tone for Biola's commanding position by making changeovers come in rapid succession and "double-flipping" his scorecard every time he walked back to his bench.

As much as Biola's No. 1 sustained his high level of play through his second set too, it was Andres Meneses who beat Prokopchuk to the finish for the Eagles' first singles win. Meneses improved to 3-1 in singles play at the Biola Tennis Center with his win, while Goodman's group found itself up 3-1 in the dual just ad Edwyn Ramos was going into the second changeover in his second set on court four.

Ramos earned a hard-fought first set win 6-4 and Derek James was minutes away from evening his match at one set apiece on court three when play was called. Quentin Lau won four games in a row to wrap up his match at No. 6 and only dropped three games across the two sets.

Like Meneses, Lau is also 3-1 in singles play at home this season.

That familiarity and success at the Biola Tennis Center will come into play this Friday when Biola hosts Holy Names at 3:30 p.m. in a match that will be key to determining PacWest tournament seeding.
