Defense All Day

Even while scoring 80 points, the stifling defense from Biola Women’s Basketball was Saturday’s storyline.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Women's Basketball reached the 80-point threshold for the fifth time this season on Saturday afternoon against Holy Names University. Head Coach Alan Nakamura's group delivered another incredible 22-to-0 run during the first half that gave Biola a ton of cushion and Tatum Brimley scored a bunch more points as she continues her climb toward 1,000 career points.

But the leading headline for the Eagles' 10th home win over the year has to be the stifling defense that limited the visiting Hawks to seven points in the first quarter and just four in the second. As a result, BU re-set's its NCAA-Era record for fewest points allowed in a game. The Eagles had limited Hawaii Hilo to just 32 points in Chase Gym this past December.

"The energy and enthusiasm we played with today was great to see!" said Coach Nakamura. "This team really cares about each other, and love each other, and they showed that togetherness by how they played and communicated, and pulled for each other."

Led by two three-pointers and an and-one from Brimley over the first five-plus minutes, Nakamura's group jumped out of the gate with an 18-4 lead over Holy Names. Brimley ended up making all seven of her shot attempts from the field and free-throw line in the first half and outscored the Hawks all by herself with 13 points.

The senior guard scored 17 points overall in just 23 minutes and is now at 967 for her career at Biola.

The Eagles scored 30 points off of HNU's turnovers over the first 20 minutes and prevented the Hawks from taking any field goal attempts at all for a five-minutes stretch between the first and second quarters. That span was part of the Eagles aforementioned 22-to-0 run that turned an 18-7 scored into a 40-7 advantage for Biola.

Six Eagles scored at least two points for the Eagles during that unanswered streak while also making a field goal in the second quarter, turning that second period into the home team's best scoring quarter of the season (29 points).

The Hawks, by comparison, were limited to 1-for-10 shooting in the second period as Biola's defense locked down and stole the ball time and again: every women had at least one steal in the first half for Biola and the Eagles recorded the most steals they've had in a ball game (24) since they got 25 steals against Lethbridge (Alberta) on December 29, 2016.

Stephanie Lee led the Eagles with eight second-half points and finished just behind Brimley with 16 overall. Aysia Johnson got back into double figures for the 10th time this season with 10 points and recorded a double-double with 10 boards. Freshman Jordan Rabe set a new scoring career-high with six points to go along with four boards.

The Eagles hit the road this coming Monday for their final away game of the regular season. Biola will take on Fresno Pacific at 5:30 p.m.
