Power Plays Galvanize Eagles

Biola Baseball wins both ends of Friday’s doubleheader behind power hitting and 15 strikeouts from Larson Kindreich.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Friday was a great day to be at Eagles Diamond if you're the type of baseball fan that likes the homerun ball and power pitching.

The University of Colorado Colorado Springs and Biola matched up for a very entertaining double header to open their four games series and combined for 11 extra-base hits on the day. But Biola took advantage of homeruns in key spots when the Mountain Lions did not and threw an ace in game two that UCCS could hardly touch, leading Head Coach Jeff Calhoon's team to win both ends of the doubleheader.

In game one, the teams showed they were evenly matched from the get-go. Colorado Springs put a double and single together with two outs against starter Kenny Carrillo to scratch together a run in the top of the first. But RobertAntony Cruz helped Biola respond immediately with a solo homerun in the bottom half of the frame to even the game again at 1-1.

The next four runs of the contest were all scored with two outs as the Mountain Lions built a 4-2 lead after five innings.

Carrillo fought hard and got key strikeouts to limit the damage to four runs, stranding the bases loaded in the second and runners at second and third in the fourth. And that early work, combined with freshman Gilbert Lopez 2.2 innings of scoreless relief kept the Eagles in the game long enough so the batting order could get familiar with UCCS starter Daniel Silva and capitalize when he began to fatigue.

The men who led the mission in scoring against Silva in the late innings were in the second half of Biola's order. Cole Beemer got the ball moving with a two-out single that plated Ben Smith in the fifth inning. Then the Mountain Lions elected to send Silva back out for the seventh with 90 pitches and the Eagles facing him for a third time.

After Rylan Greenlee singled through the ride side to leadoff the inning, Andy Van Antwerp and Smith both jumped on belt-high fastballs and gave their team back-to-back homeruns for a 5-4 lead. UCCS immediately went to the bullpen after Smith's homerun and Biola was in the driver's seat for the rest of the game.

Colorado Springs tied the game with a solo homer that prevented Gilbert Lopez from earning the win in the best outing of his collegiate career thus far. But Beemer led off the bottom of the ninth with a double and quickly moved up 90 feet with a beautiful sacrifice bunt from Tyler Baca.

Jacob Portaro then blistered a fastball halfway up the centerfield fence after UCCS them loaded the bases to create the force opportunity, delivering the walkoff single that gave Biola the 6-5 win.

The scoring summary for game two is much more concise. Andy Van Antwerp basically hit a carbon copy of his game one two-run homerun with another two-run shot in his first at-bat of game two. Then Ryan Gallegos gave the Eagles an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with his first homerun of the year.

That homerun gave Gallegos a five-game hitting streak going into Saturday. But it also afforded Larson Kindreich the extra cushion he needed to put the finishing touches on his masterful start.

Kindreich became the strikeouts leader among NCAA pitchers at all levels going into the weekend with his 15 strikeouts in seven shutout innings. He struck out every member of the Mountain Lions' starting lineup at least once and recorded eight K's in a row from the fourth to the seventh inning.

Kindreich also induced 22 swing-and-misses from UCCS batters and didn't allow a runner to reach third base safely until the top of the seventh inning.

But what was just as impressive as Kindreich's strikeout stuff was his pinpoint command over his seven innings. After ending the second inning with a strikeout of John Mallon on three pitches, the left-hander went on a run of throwing 43 of 47 pitches for strikes and had two-strike counts against 12-straight batters. All told, he recorded 22 two-strike counts against the 25 batters he faced and prevented UCCS from hitting the ball into fair territory for three innings after the Mountain Lions got a leadoff single in the fourth.

Kindreich improves to 3-0 on the year after recording the second complete game shutout of his career. Biola also moves to 7-1 overall and 6-1 at home after sweeping the doubleheader.

"Larson was special today. He did a great job attacking down in the zone and executing our pitch plan," said Coach Calhoon. "I'm proud of the hard work he puts in day in and day out and of the work Andy, Ryan and Jake did to carry the offense today. UCCS is a very good team, though, and it will be a battle tomorrow to win a series against a tough veteran group."

The final two parts of the series will be played at Eagles Diamond on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
