Sasa Shocks Biola

Biola, which already played 100 minutes in the last four days, had trouble getting going at Hilo.

January 06, 2020

Box Score HILO, Hawaii --- Biola got 22 points from Chris Rossow, won the rebounding battle and was a sparkling 14-for-18 from the free throw line on Monday night. The only problem is the Eagles ran up against Hawaii Hilo's Sasa "Eagle Killer" Vuksanovic and a Vulcans defense that held BU to just .389 shooting, the team's second-lowest percentage of the year. The Vulcans split the season series with the Eagles by winning the game 69-63.

Vuksanovic led all players with 26 points and UHH sub Kaleb Gilmore dropped in a season-high 16 points. Those two players accounted for 61 percent of the Vulcans' total offense and went a combined 15-for-23. Hawaii Hilo was hot all night, shooting .563, which is a new season-best. Sasa had his second great game against the Eagles this season. He had a double-double in UHH's loss at Biola earlier this year, scoring 17 points and grabbing 10 boards.

Both teams were playing shorthanded of sorts. For Biola, it was the Eagles' third game in a five-day stretch, which included a four-overtime win last time out. For Hilo, the team is beset with the flu and was missing two key players, forcing Gilmore the step it up on Monday night.

Hawaii Hilo led the entire first half, taking a seven-point lead (36-29) into the halftime break. The Eagles found their shooting stroke for a quick minute at the outset in the second half. The team went on a 13-4 run over the first three minutes and change, making five of their first six shots from the field to take their first lead at 42-40.

Biola would not trail again until Gilmore hit a three-point shot to break a long scoreless streak by both teams and put Hawaii Hilo ahead 53-51. Biola never tied the game back up or took the lead, with Hilo holding on for the final eight minutes and 10 seconds.

After the Vulcans upped their lead to six points, Biola used a five-point run by Rossow along to pull back within one at 62-61 and 1:34 on the clock.

Great defense from UHH allowed only two more field goal opportunities to the Eagles over those final 94 seconds. Biola missed both of the threes it jacked up. On the other end, Hilo made its free throws and that was that.

Rossow (22), Jesse Elrod (11) and Marquise Mosley (10) all had double-digit efforts on a night where the offense was hard to come by. Elrod fouled out for the second-consecutive game but this time lasted 29 minutes and nearly came away with a double-double (9 rebounds).

Other contributors for the Eagles were Alex Wright (6 points, 6 rebounds) and Solomon Ruddell (7 points, 5 rebounds, 50% shooting).

The second surprise loss of the trip sends Biola home with a 9-5 overall record and 5-3 PacWest Conference mark. Hawaii Hilo improved to 5-6 and 3-4 in PacWest. The Eagles will look to get back on track this Saturday at home against Academy of Art (4-9, 2-4 PacWest). Biola is 6-0 at home this season.
