Defense, Threes Key Victory

Biola Women’s Basketball gets another PacWest victory over Chaminade, sinking 11 three-pointers and forcing 25 turnovers.

HONOLULU --- Biola Women's Basketball delivered another commanding PacWest victory on Saturday, defeating the Chaminade Silverswords 71-46 in a wire-to-wire victory.

After taking a 5-3 lead on the Eagles' first three-pointer two minutes into the contest, Head Coach Alan Nakamura's group never trailed the rest of the way and earned their fourth win by 25 points or more behind 11 three-pointers and 25 forced turnovers.

Biola improves to 5-2 in PacWest play after the win and should be well rested heading into Monday's matchup at Hawaii Hilo since no Eagle played 30 minutes. The Eagles moved back into a tie for third place in the conference with Concordia, who lost to Academy of Art in overtime on Saturday.

The Eagles did a great job distributing the ball on offense from the opening tip is Saturday's contest, as seven different women made one of Biola's seven field goals in the first quarter. Chaminade kept the score close at 16-13 after 10 minutes, but 10 rapid points from Kayla Macedo and Aysia Johnson over the first three minutes of the second quarter quickly built the Eagles' lead to a comfortable eight points.

Macedo accounted for eight of those 10 points and went a perfect 3-for-3 from the field in the second quarter to lead her team in first-half scoring. The senior off-guard was one of six Eagles to score five points or more in the first half and made two more three pointers in the third quarter to set a new career-high with 14 points.

This is the second-straight time a senior guard has set a new career-high against Chaminade in McCabe Gym: Brenna Khaw scored 21 points against the Silverswords in a 67-57 win on January 31, 2019.

Macedo's two threes in the third period were part of a massive 24-to-4 Biola run that put the game away for Nakamura's group. The Eagles went 6-for-8 from beyond the arc during that six and a half minute stretch to take a 63-36 lead into the fourth quarter. Biola also got five steals during that stretch alone to carry the team to a new season-high of 19 steals.

Following Macedo, Jazz Benn led the starting five with 13 points and Danita Estorga recorded 10 points for the 11th time this season. Aysia Johnson dished out five assists and grabbed six streals to go along with seven points. And freshman Jordan Rabe led the team with six rebounds in just 12 minutes of action.

The Eagles will island-hop to Hilo on Sunday in advance of their final game of the Hawaii trip. The game against the Vulcans will start at 7 p.m. Pacific Time.
