Eagles Out-Muscle Penguins

Biola Women’s Basketball recorded 17 steals in a 70-58 win in Chase Gym over Dominican.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Women's Basketball defeated Dominican University of California for the second time this season on Saturday, recording 17 steals in the effort and getting team-wide production on offense to win 70-58.

Head Coach Alan's Nakamura's side now improves to 13-6 and 9-4 PacWest while sustaining their now seven-game home winning streak and 4-0 record in their second meetings with opponents this season. The win also helped the Eagles jump into fourth place in the conference standings over Point Loma.

The Sea Lions are now 1-3 in their last four road games after losing at Fresno Pacific on Saturday and will travel to La Mirada to face Biola this coming Wednesday.

After defeating the Penguins 84-53 in San Rafael this past December, Biola got off to another hot start with 22 points in the first quarter on Saturday. Jazz Benn led the team with eight points over the first 10 minutes while the Eagles held Jerusha Paine, the nation's leading scorer in NCAA DII, to just two points over that span.

Credit Mikayla Greens' defense for that, as Paine missed her first three shot attempts and only really started to roll once the Eagles has established a comfortable lead.

Aysia Johnson and Stephanie Lee supported Benn's strong start by chipping in a combined 22 first-half points to help Biola build a 40-32 lead going into halftime. Lee's first 20 minutes were particularly exciting because of the similarity to her 21-point outburst in the Eagles' first win over Dominican this year.

The freshman guard went 4-for-6 and sank both of her threes in the first half on the way to 15 points and four steals in the contest. Lee also punctated the end to her eight-point first quarter by draining her second four-point play of the year just before the buzzer.

But it was Johnson whose box score showed the biggest improvement from Biola's first game against Dominican to this one: she led the team with 17 points and eight rebounds to go along with four steals and two blocks.

Benn and Tatum Brimley were the other members of the starting five to score in double figures. Seven of Brimley's 12 came in the second half to help keep Dominican at bay while Benn scored 11 points and set a new career-high with five steals on Saturday.

Jelissa Puckett swished both of her open looks on the afternoon to record six points. Greens and Madi Chang added four and five points, respectively, as they shared the responsibility of guarding Paine.

It ended up being the Eagles work to get steals on defense that was the final difference in the game. The 17 steals is the third-most Biola has achieved in a game this season and it resulted in 25 points off turnovers, a plus-12 margin in that category over a Penguins team that lost by 12 points.

The Eagles are riding high in Chase Gym headed into a big week for defending home court. They'll host Point Loma on Wednesday before welcoming Azusa Pacific to Chase Gym for a Cornerstone Cup matchup Saturday night.
