Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Brandon Taylor, Assistant Sports Information Director

This Is Our House!

A 32-0 run in the second half and a great home cheering section marked a 81-73 win over Point Loma.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- No one has seen anything in Chase Gym like what Biola Women's Basketball did from the end of the first quarter through the second quarter on Wednesday night. After falling behind 19-10 with a minute left in the first quarter, Head Coach Alan Nakamura's group held the Point Loma Sea Lions scoreless for over 10-straight minutes and caught fire from deep to go on a 32-to-0 run and take a 44-22 lead into halftime.

The Eagles would have held the visiting team scoreless in the second period had not a last second miss from Biola create the opportunity for an open three-pointer in transition for the Sea Lions. Outside of that, the home team outscored PLNU 28-3 in the second quarter and went 5-for-8 from beyond the arc during their incredible run to pull away.

Sixteen second-half points from senior guard Tatum Brimley and good shooting from the charity stripe held things together over the final 20 minutes for Biola to hold onto its 14th win of the year. The Eagles also pulled themselves into a tie for second place in the PacWest with a 10-4 mark and became the second team to reach 10 wins in conference play.

"This was a very even game. As you saw tonight, Point Loma can score quickly inside and out, and they are physical and tough on the defensive end," said Head Coach Alan Nakamura. "Both teams went on runs, and the game could have gone either way. I am proud of the persistence and togetherness of our team. Through thick and thin we showed a lot of desire and poise at the end.

"There is a long way to go in this season, we are working through a lot of injuries, and every game is going to present a big challenge, but I think we are headed in the right direction. This team is humble, unified, and very coachable, so I think our best basketball is ahead of us."

Two freshman, Madi Chang and Stephanie Lee, fittingly paced the Eagles' scoring during the big run, as both women made massive contributions to their team's winning effort against a tough team.

Lee simply caught fire with 15 points on 6-for-7 shooting during the first half and perfect shooting from three-point range. Chang made four-straight free throws to start that big stretch and followed it up with back-to-back layups in the second quarter to record a new career-high with eight points.

Then she made a big defensive impact in the second half as Point Loma began to make things tighter, recording a block with a massive swat and a key steal in the fourth quarter to seal things for the Eagles.

Lee continued to be dangerous after halftime with 11 more points that also led her to set a new career-high with 26 points while missing just one three-point attempt. But she certainly didn't overshadow Brimley and Jazz Benn, both of whom showed how reliable they were by shooting 50 percent from the field.

Brimley went as far as to make a layup as she was literally falling flat onto the floor with under four minutes left that pushed Biola's lead back up to nine. And Benn finished just one three-pointer behind Lee for the team-lead by going 4-for-6 from long range for 15 points while leading her group with nine boards.

The Eagles finished the game with 13 three-pointers and chipped in assists on 15 of their 24 makes. Point Loma made it as close as a five-point game. But a three from Lee and Brimley's aforementioned acrobatic layup widened the gap again.

Nakamura's group will look to harness the electricity from this win and carry it into their next game on Saturday. Biola hosts the No. 16 Azusa Pacific Cougars at 5:30 p.m.
