Home Court Advantage Prevails

Biola Women’s Basketball earns its sixth-straight win at home with a very tight 42-33 win over Notre Dame de Namur.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Notre Dame de Namur's women's basketball team has a proven reputation of being hard to score against. After winning their last two games and holding the Dominican Penguins to just 41 points this past Monday, the Argos came to Chase Gym in search of their first win against the Biola Eagles.

But Head Coach Alan Nakamura's team got all the stops they needed over the final three quarters and got clutch scoring from substitutes in the second half to win the low-scoring game by a final score of 42-33. The Eagles improve to 12-6, 8-4 PacWest while pushing their home winning streak to six games.

"Give Notre Dame a lot of credit. They are very well-coached and their players are tough, quick, and are very committed to their philosophies," said Head Coach Alan Nakamura. "I am excited about how we hung in there. We were strong because we played together, and kept competing on every possession for 40 minutes. We made enough plays at both ends of the floor, and played with a lot of poise to close out the game."

The Argos certainly pushed the Eagles off-balance early with defensive stops and forced turnovers. Notre Dame de Namur took a 10-9 lead into the second quarter and held Biola scoreless for a nearly nine-minute stretch between the first and second period while it held onto the lead.

It wouldn't last though, as Biola got a number of key field goals down the stretch of the second half to take a lead into the break. Sophomore guard Aysia Johnson poked the ball free in the backcourt with just over three minutes left in the second quarter and scored a breakaway layup that tied the game at 11. Then Mikayla Greens and Jelissa Puckett made a layup and three-pointer, respectively, that gave the Eagles a four-point lead at halftime and started a scoring run that continued into the next period for Nakamura's group.

Tatum Brimley wrapped up Biola's 9-0 scoring run with two driving lay-ins to build Biola lead to eight points at 20-12. Brimley's team went on to sustain a lead of at least four points through the third quarter and until three minutes into the fourth, when NDNU brought it within two points. But a layup from Greens and a three-pointer from Stephanie Lee gave the Eagles breathing room again and put them in the driver's seat for the final three minutes of the contest.

Led by Greens' six and Johnson's five points in the period, Biola scored a game-high 16 points in the fourth quarter on 50 percent shooting. Greens, Johnson and Lee each scored 10 points for Biola while no Argos got into double figures scoring.

Brimley, with eight points, and Puckett with four accounted for the other 12 points Biola scored on the night.

The Eagles will defend their home winning streak on Saturday when they host the Dominican Penguins at 2 p.m.
