January 23, 2020

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Tanner Smith is the latest Pacific Collegiate Swim & Dive Conference NCAA Division II Male Swimmer of the Week. Smith helped Biola to a second-place finish in the Biola Invitational this past weekend, winning two individual events and leading a pair of relays to runner-up finishes.

Smith took first place in both the 200-IM (1:59.69) and the 200-backstroke (2:00.41). He had the second-fastest backstroke split in the whole meet to help the Eagles' team place second in the 400-medley relay and then helped his 'A' team finish second in the freestyle relay also.

"Tanner has been a workhorse since before he even arrived. He's believed in the culture and leading this men's program into a successful future, so it's great to see him honored in this way," said Head Coach Ryan Kauth. "His behavior, mentality and persistence in and out of the pool led him to this point, and I believe he's going to peak at the perfect time. Tanner showed a lot of grit in his swims this weekend, and I know he'll be a force at the end of the year."

Smith also finished in the top-10 in the men's 50-freestyle event, rounding out a great weekend for the freshman. The Eagles accumulated 1,219 total points in their final invitational of the regular season, placing second to Concordia Irvine (1,456). Biola will dual CUI head-to-head this Saturday on-campus at Lansing Pool in the final meet overall this regular season.

After that the Eagles head to East LA College for the PCSC Championship meet from Feb. 12-15.
