Eagles Can’t Be Overlooked

Biola’s determined attempt at a major upset of No. 10 Hawaii Pacific was spoiled by last-second heroics from the Sharks.

HONOLULU --- There's no doubt about it. Biola Women's Basketball pulled the rug from under No. 10 Hawaii Pacific after the Sharks took a 12-point lead into halftime and nearly delivered the PacWest's first place team its first conference loss on a silver platter.

With a Stephanie Lee three-pointer a little over three minutes into the fourth quarter, the Eagles would take a 52-51 lead that they would hold for most of the game's duration.

Biola Women's Basketball played excellent second half defense to get back in the game, limiting the Sharks to 22 second-half points and 2-for-16 shooting from three. Then the Eagles got the clutch points they needed in the fourth quarter to put the Sharks into desperation mode for the first time since early November.

Senior guard Tatum Brimley made two big layups in traffic and a free throw attempt over the final three minutes to prevent the Sharks from pulling even. But a last-second desperation three-pointer from Hawaii Pacific fell for the Sharks' second field goal in 14 fourth quarter attempts to steal the unlikely victory.

Up until that point, had held the Sharks scoreless for six minutes from the 9:30 mark in the fourth quarter to close the deficit Biola had at the start of the period. After that string of eight stops in a row against the only PacWest team that averages over 80 points per game, the Eagles induced another miss in the Sharks first attempt to tie the game with under 20 seconds. But the scramble for the ball led to a Hawaii Pacific offensive rebound and an open three-point attempt in the chaos to turn the game around.

That exceptional second half and the multiple opportunities to the Eagles had in the final minutes to create more of a cushion will make Biola Women's Basketball all the more hungry to dominate the rest of its PacWest schedule and may the Sharks pay in the teams' next meeting. That was not a missed opportunity for a David to clip a Goliath. This was a game of well-matched opponents that Biola will hope to pull its own way when it plays game two of this series at home.

Seniors guards Brimley and Jelissa Puckett produced what might be their best box scores of the season, considering the opponent. Brimley scored 21 points for the second-straight game and reached double figures for the fifth time in a row in just 28 minutes. Puckett was a floor general who played a season-high 37 minutes and pulled down 12 rebounds while scoring seven points and getting four steals.

Biola will start its preparation for its second meeting with Hawaii Pacific on February 15 by completing the next two games of its Hawaii road trip. Up next is a matchup with the Chaminade Silverswords on Saturday at 3 p.m. Pacific Time.
