Defense Decides This One

Azusa Pacific plays great defense wire-to-wire against Biola Women’s Basketball to win the first Cornerstone Cup meeting.

AZUSA, Calif. --- It was tough sledding on the road for Biola Women's Basketball at No. 19 Azusa Pacific on Saturday night. The Eagles were held under 25 percent shooting from the field during the first Cornerstone Cup matchup of the year and weren't able to recover after ending the first quarter with an 18-to-2 deficit.

The Cougars took the first Cornerstone Cup meeting of the year by a 85-46 score to secure five points toward the Cup and take a 35-20 lead in the standings headed into the men's basketball game on Saturday.

The Eagles put in the work to force Azusa Pacific into 17 turnovers and to match the Cougars with 15 offensive rebounds. Guards Aysia Johnson (11 points) and Stephanie Lee (12) both finished in double figures for the Eagles while four women collected at least five rebounds.

But the game boiled down to the air-tight defense Azusa Pacific played from the opening tip that prevented Biola from really finding its footing. The Eagles finished the game with 15 makes in 65 attempts and only made six three-pointers in their trip to the offensive half of the floor while the Cougars had four women score more than 10 points.

The 11-point effort was the third time in the past four games Johnson got into double figures. Saturday's game was also the first time Lee led her team in scoring since she scored 21 points on the road at Dominican on December 7.

Despite coming up empty from beyond the arc, senior guard Tatum Brimley also filled up the stat sheet with four points, five boards and five steals, tying her career-high that she set almost two years to the day on January 13, 2018 against Concordia University Irvine.

Mikayla Greens' work on the glass is also worth noting, as the senior grabbed eight rebounds for the third time this season and brings her within 27 boards of 500 in her four year career with Biola Women's Basketball.

The Eagles will come home to Chase Gym for their next game as they look to rebound from the loss. Biola hosts Notre Dame de Namur on Thursday January 23 at 5:30 p.m.
